They fill the bottom of the Cason drop piles with stone/mot when using drop hammer so it’s not metal on metal.

Looks like vibro stone columns, used as a type of ground improvement process. Basically drill down and stone is poured in and vibrated on the way back up

As Conor says, be vibro piles. Intention is to improve the bearing capacity of the site by compacting columns of a "Graded" material with known properties. Very effective and cost efficient in the right applications.

This job is for 2 houses being built on part of a field we rent new to our house.

presumably the spike pipe cap stays at the bottom of the hole and gets buried????

Never thought of that. Makes sense. But, 140 piles for 2 houses i don't think that would be feasible

Got to be cheaper than concrete piles and I'd bet they would want the same amount. So much for going green. Structural engineers seem to find it a a competition as to how much material we can force into the ground

Dug afew footings through them before, you know they are there alright!! And much easier to dig than with concrete/metal piles everywhere!

Done loads of industrial units where they used the stone piles. Firstly you get some additional load bearing on the actual stone columns and secondly it can improve the load bearing o Bt he existing ground as when you force and vibrate the columns it compacts the surrounding ground. Only works in certain ground conditions but a cheaper option when it is suitable.

Cementation used to do similar work. They had a dumper with a chute on the front, withdrew the poker and tipped the stone in, then dropped the poker in to compact. Rinse and repeat until the hole was full. It was remarkable how little soil needed clearing up afterwards.
