Always made me ponder, how does the first man setting off into these know where the road is, and more importantly how to stay on it.
A few of the pics show branches as marker poles at the top of the drifts, but obviously they're only placed afterwards.
With today's technology is it GPS positioning?

end of June 1983 ... heading up the Col D'Iseran sloooowly, on the way to Val D'Isere ... they were still clearing the higher pass - was still blocked and closed
.. was a lot deeper further up, riding between walls of snow like Frank's pix
