I got a lot of work from the last gas pipe session here abouts ....... and quite a bit on the fuel line from IIRC Milford to the Midlands, running through/around Brecon

The gas line boys had deep pockets, were always in a hurry and willing to pay a premium to have it done yesterday :giggle: .... did very well from them and made some friends too, who I keep in touch with
Yeh, I found that too, if the quality is there it wasn’t a problem in paying a premium, cheaper in the long run🙂

Was on the pipelines years ago, some of cat sidebooms I'm sure must have been something like 30-40 years old at that time. Laing's at the time had just bought some of them liebher sidebooms was a big leap from the cats all servo controlled. Volvo were just designing their 360 version which I'd imagine would have been a game changer due to the versatility of being 360

Haha...had to take a second look when it appeared, he has so much old stuff, then something like that turned up😱

must be handy when Volvo has sponsorship deal with the show you get nice new products to show case 😂

guys thanks, I don't use my parts, I've seen one loaded on the trailer at the port dismantled, I think the crawler tractor was a very big fiat allis maybe pl 60 a very big one I'm not sure, I don't know the working principle , on the net many caterpillar tractor d8, perhaps invented and developed by caterpillar engineers I guess am I wrong? even on wikipedia there are piperlyner notices, thanks

to lower the pipes in the excavation we use the excavator as a crane hook cables to the bucket and with those we harness the pipes and lower them into the trench excavation, some use traditional cranes on trucks like you presume, right? perhaps the piperlyner oil industry tractors ..

A few sidebooms could lower and lay a good few hundred meters plus of pipe at a time.
Always amazes me just how much flex there was in a few pipes welded together.
Getting under power cables was always tricky although the majority of the guys on the sidebooms were all decent operators.
One of the main advantages the traditional sidebooms probably have over the 360 version would be the adjustable counterweight that could be offset from the machine although this still won't solve too much weight far out or soft ground.

Esso are going to replace the pipeline that runs from Southampton to Heathrow. Runs right through my village so will be interesting when that gets going. Doubt the'll be any work for us local contractors though.
Alot of it is/was jobs for the boys, there was the odd solo setup can remember 1 guy who was owner operator of a backhoe in Bicester, but other than that mostly Scottish or Welsh lads

yeh ..... these pipeline outfits are like a circus ... and move from site to site ... dare say it helps a lot knowing who you're using and their abilities from one site to the next .... plus they too know the game

Wouldn't go as far to say that 😂
Generally the same group of guys in the higher positions then friends/relatives of either those guys or office people

in essence there are few companies that rent piperlyners, if I understand correctly it is a particular equipment, which is used only in the oil field, however in my opinion I could also be wrong, a good solution is volvo, turning the excavator into a crane piperlyner, use both the excavator and the crane according to the needs of a Swiss Army knife. piperyners are too exclusive as a work camp, right?

excuse me if I am boring and petulant and I insist on the subject, according to your experience, the pipelayer sideboom, could be adapted in forestry and forestry work, to recover and tow large trunks in the bosci, in the slopes and in the mountain slopes, or is it too slow and awkward for this application, a friend of mine saw a small piperlayer bulldozzer and would like to take it to recover the trunks in the woods. what do you think, a good idea or bad, like a gin pole truck so to speak. thanks

a woodcutter friend of mine, a woodcutter, says it could be a heavy, slow, awkward maneuver especially if the ground is wet with heavy rain, too heavy for the counterweight, maybe you should hook the siderboon arm in the back of the tractor to balance the weights what you think ? thanks

what do you think, better pipelayer or tractor with winch and back boom. for work recovery and towing trunks in the woods along the paths and slopes and gullies in the mountains? too complicated to modify and adapt pipelayer I think ..sideboom

Would have thought sidebooms wouldn't really be suitable as a recovery unit too restrictive in their use

thanks for your valuable intervention, perhaps too heavy and awkward because of the lateral counterweight I assume. a friend of mine cuts the logs to the bruno san greenhouse and uses a wheeled tractor with a rear winch, the trunks load them with the loading crane behind the cab, a classic, thanks anyway

If you just want to tow something up a hill an old dozer with a winch would do the job, plus could grade out the track if needed . The problem with sideboom would be the counterweight adding width and the need to remove the boom to be able to clear any overhead. To be fair a decent size backhoe or 360 would just be as handy

In the states they use them on railway derailment work. There are companies dedicated to railway recovery, must be lucrative work.

yeh some one put up a great vid on CEF of a fleet of side booms sorting a train wreck in the middle of a town in the states ... certainly made short work of the job ..... IIRC the train had hit a low loader on a crossing with a mobile crane on the trailer ... was a bit s/hand after ....... can't find the vid :( .... but there are lots of side booms in use as you say
