sorry if I introduce this topic, but nobody talks about the piperlayer I think they are called so, here tracked bulldozzer tractors that have a tilted side arm and a cable hoist, I accidentally saw one disassembled on a trailer of an articulated lorry. not even on wikipedia I found news about the inventor prototypes I use performance function. We use traditional cranes to position the pipelines or with the excavator we hook the lifting cables to the bucket and we use it as a crane, I saw the volvo pipers very beautiful real cranes , the others are derivation of the d8 caterpillar or other well-known brands let me know thanks

They’ve got quite a lift as well configured as a pipe layer. Probably gives the CPCS a headache wondering how to squeeze more money for certifying operators on these.

They certainly turned the side boom industry around, that was for sure, no more siting in the freezing howling rain or sweating in the baking sun, the lads I was with used to have the beer garden umbrellas on the machines to keep the sun off them.

we've had a few pipelines come through this area over the years and the side boom op.s were highly respected on the spread ... as much as the welders were .... highly skilled members of the team and a dying breed, I'd imagine ... all the ones I knew would be retired, some even dead by now ... a game for tough guys .... wimps need not apply.

There were Gra and also paid handsomely for there effrorts, to be fare, even the welders mate was a good job to be had if you didn’t mind the graft. Yeh sadly they are a dying breed with not the height of work that was around in the UK at the time. Quite a bit of work going off in Canada at the moment I’ve been told.....Was speaking to Taylor a while ago, and it turned out that I think he used to work with my old spread boss back in Algeria, a bloke by the name of Stewart Dimond, extremely fortunate to be able to work with someone of his caliber, sadly he passed away a number of years ago.

Esso are going to replace the pipeline that runs from Southampton to Heathrow. Runs right through my village so will be interesting when that gets going. Doubt the'll be any work for us local contractors though.

You might get a surprise if you can get in early enough, it’s quite a big thing with the big contractors now, that they are seen to be using local labour and people, rather than just steam rollering through like they used to, obviously they’ll have there core team and it’s more of a tick box thing, but if your able to pick a few bits and bats up at the start, it could lead to bigger things.

When jobs like that kick off, there are always information days, like in the village halls etc, they’ll be representatives from the company doing the job, letting the local residents know what’s going to happen, how long it will take, helpline numbers etc, etc. If you can get down to a couple of them, show your face, it’ll be a great place to pick up some names, numbers and emails of people who you need to speak to, regarding work on the job and what you can offer.

I got a lot of work from the last gas pipe session here abouts ....... and quite a bit on the fuel line from IIRC Milford to the Midlands, running through/around Brecon

The gas line boys had deep pockets, were always in a hurry and willing to pay a premium to have it done yesterday .... did very well from them and made some friends too, who I keep in touch with
