Recently carried out some work for a small sized housing developer.
My original job was price work got the job done in good time, profit was made customer was happy with work so everyone’s happy.
Had a job cancelled so I offered me & my 14ton to stay on site and carry out any jobs they wanted doing. He agreed so I did a week extra for them on an operated hire basis.
We didn’t organise what I was being paid until the week was over for one reason or another (large school boy error)
When the time came I said what I wanted for what I had done. I supplied 14t machine with driver & fuel. He disagreed and told me he could get another larger plant hire company to have done the same for almost a £10 an hour cheaper.
As an owner operator am I completely in the wrong here or is it very hard to stay competitive & actually make any money out of the job. When large plant hire firms can seem to put a machine & man out at the moment for next to nothing seemingly just to cover cost? Another company I do a lot of op-hire for was offered a 21-tonner & driver at £28 pound an hour!? Seems mental to me but I could be completely wrong.
