Yeah and the loop is aften slightly to big etc fir the snap hook so u need a shackle...pet peeve 😏
With the new style clips you clip direct to the loop not pass the clip through the loop.

The old style clips must be looped & clipped to the cable.

it's illegal to loop it around the ball ..... must have a separate attachment point
If & only if there is no official point or better place you can then loop the ball as a last resort.

As all bars since 2014 must have a clip point & all flanged bars have a better place (ie behind flange) that only leaves older swan necks that can be looped.

Yes it need to be on somewhere not attached to the towball incase the towball comes undone bit I've never seen how that works with a bolted on frame noones checking the bolts to the chassis but you would notice if the ball was loose.

There's so many times when the hole is to thick for the clip but the holes too small for feed the clip through
The MOT checks them.

Anyone ever check for ball wear?
Mate of mine lost a 16ft flat on the M1 with load of unistrut ...ended up sideways on the central reservation... subsequent enquiry etc found the ball and hitch to be worn..jumped out. Newish transit and well maintained trailer. Said it was scariest moment of his life watching it unhitch out his rearview mirror...no one hit it either.😳
Most hitches have a wear indicator built in.

If you get the trailer serviced at an NTTA approved center they test for ball / hitch wear.

They also do free checks.

Just shows you should set the trailer handbrake when loading especially on a flatbed I had one take off on me luckily I kept going and the pickup wheels came back down and it stopped
Had it happen to me tracking my 18t off an artic drive forgot to set trailer brakes on managed to track back on backwards to put weight back on the unit axles while driver rushed to pull brake lever on trailer took a few moments to stop once he did unit partly jack knifed😂🤣

I was filming a woman driving dumper on site the other day her husband was on the digger. It was pretty dangerous going down this step with a soil ramp right next to a brook 12ft down no seatbelt etc but nothing happened so all good. I felt a bit of a dick recording after reading the comments here about that forklift on site so had to take a bit of a look at myself.

I did make a joke about her not wearing the belt but I'm not going to tell anyone what to do as I don't like it myself. She did get better as the day went. Early doors I thought this could be bad. They dug up playground got a load of the rubber workshop mats underneath the surface
