I rushed out this morning to take a few photos but I think mine is not the same. I'm in my Sunday Best so can't really get up and personal until later

I can't see the reservoir in any of my pictures

Can you not find/see the cable coming out of the cab?
What about the pipe from the slave cylinder? Can you not trace that back?

I can see the cable from the hand lever disappearing below the plastic trim going 'downwards' but can't spot it from underneath. I can see the hydraulic hose coming from the slave cylinder, round the kingpost and disappearing sort of upwards and to the right.

I wish I were a bit more flexible and able to properly crawl under and bend a bit better but anno domini are catching up with me.

I have a feeling a bit of Chinese rubbish I bought recently came with what I think is called a 'selfy stick' - I may be able to poke that into the darker regions and take a video that will cover more territory

No it's definitely hydraulic as the slave cylinder is in full view, but yes I'd had the same thought.

I've just had a younger and more nimble friend get up close and personal with the back end, and he confirms absolutely no sign of the reservoir or master cylinder.
This is getting crazy !

If you want a job doing properly do it your self !

I toughed up, got the crawler board out and rolled myself under the back end. Sure enough no reservoir on the right side by the axle because it's over on the other side miles away ! No sign of any access cover from above to get at it for checking, and it's of course absolutely caked in cack, but at least I know where it is !

Oh and I found this chap under there chuntering on saying 'It MUST be under here SOMEWHERE !'

To be fair, it does look very similar to the drawing in the manual that you first posted.

Looking at Gecko’s reservoir and mine I reckon that they were installed before the cab was lowered on, an operation that perhaps the drawing office forgot was still to come later down the production line !

It's looking as though this may NOT be a Project 8 but actually a Project 9 from what I'm being told on the Vintage JCB Facebook group.

Apparently they were Project 8 when the console was at the front but became Project 9 when the console was moved to the side position. I had thought the distinguishing feature was the change from pot slewing to cylinder slewing of the king post but apparently I'm wrong!

So @Gecko what is yours, an 8 or a 9, as I think your serial number is later than mine?

I've been told mine is a P8, built Dec. '96, badged as '97.
Additionally, it is a 'hot climate' build which adds some minor differences.

Project numbers are a minefield tbh and not the most confidence inspiring way of referring to machines. I think by 1999 they were onto project 12. So many changes between about 95 and 2005 be a nightmare to keep up with.
