O licence what 7.5 tonner

I’m thinking about running a restricted O licence for 1 vehicle ( that all I could fit at mine)
If I go for this I’m torn between a wee beaver tail or a tipper .
the tipper would be real handy as I do a lot of work with tipping trailer but would be much more difficult moving plant with tipper . I have a class 2 licence so could also consider slightly bigger lorry if that would work out better .
what are you all running for lorries ?
anyone using a roll on roll off ? Thought that may give me a bit more flexibility If it’s doable

The hook lift option does appeal to this kinda setup as you can use the same truck for various activities. The problem is they can be costly to get setup for your arrangement. The main questions would be:
What size plant are you looking to shift
What size load are you looking to tip
have you got big enough yard for all the different lifts

As you have your C licence why limit yourself to 7.5T?

10-15T tend to be cheaper to buy & can carry more weight.

Don't even consider a 7.5t
Go atleast 12t
Same physical size but twice the payload.
The 7.5t I regularly drive can carry 2.6t
Which is absolutely pointless.
I think @JD450A said you can go up to either 15 or 16 tonne with the same turning circle.
For that size you could go for either a grab lorry or a hook loader and still have more carrying capacity than a 7.5t

This should carry around 7 tonnes and if you could find a low loader for it should be able to move an 8t machine

Although expensive Hookloader was best move I made vehicle wise - its a no going back job once you have had one .. I have 7.5t at moment but moving up to 14-15t in the spring.

I've the 15t Volvo for sale with a couple bins and a flatplate if it suited you but wants TLC.....

TBH 13t tipper is the way forward and get some ramps made for it.

The 10t tipper is size of a 7.5t tipper but has a 5t pay load. With the ramps I can fit on all my small stuff or do digger and dumper in 1 trip. It'll swing in all the places my 3.5t stuff will but slightly wider.

Loads would be tops 5 tonne at a time , much more than that and I would get it delivered . I am a bit restricted for space

10tonne sounds good as it would be small stuff I’d be moving . Does all the plant go up the ramps no problem ?

Can you get a six tonne payload dumper on with the ramps ?

You might have to check the body on it.
Will easily carry the weight. But body's vary.
If it has removable corner bolsters like an ifor tipper it would be best.
Obviously with a hook loader just use a plate

As for 13t
The lorry's stay the same physical size UpTo 13t so it really doesn't matter if you get a 7.5t or 13t they will fit in the same place. At 14t they go up an axle size and run bigger rims with some makes of lorry changing cab size and some staying the same.
Then at 18t they go to the big tyres big cab and big turning circle.
12t tippers are the most common out of all of them.
There are quite a few on ebay ATM.

The Volvo I posted has a drawbar hitch and 26t train weight so can tow 12t fully loaded.

Not atall providing you have the correct ramps.
It's a bit nerve racking the first couple of times you do it. Especially reversing a dumper up. Worse thing I've loaded is a telehandler into an 8 wheel tipper.
But after 5 or 6 times you don't think about it.
When I worked for an agri contractor in NZ
We moved everything in the back of an 8 wheel scania tipper with the sides removed.
I could load/unload including sorting chains in under 2 minutes.
In reality it takes longer for triple flip ramps on a plant lorry to unfold themselves than putting a set of ally ramps out

That Izuzu with the crane has convinced me! Especially as tommorow I have to move a pallet of slabs, the old fashioned way...

13t is the size I would choose if I went down the route of a tipper. Narrowist axle width in general with a suitable payload..... Rarely more than 6" wider than a 7.5t tipper. There are oddball 15t trucks that are "narrow built" (my Volvo is one) but the majority of 15t trucks sit with 18t components and thus are quite lumpy.

Under 15t is also a cheaper tax class..... From memory around £250 per year with the HGV levy (cheaper ATM).

Avoid Adblue like the plauge if your in the wilderness like me and intending to have it for occasional use..... Ad Blue does not like being left parked up.

Yes, it's not much taller than my old 3.5t truck. I do have 4m long ramps for it.
