Nightmare

Just had a nightmare with my old winget forklift. Prepping for monday thought ill just nip out on the road move a bag of pea gravel that is on my drive take it round the back. I knew the bag was heavy and one of my front tyres is looking a little iffy. Thought hope it doesn't pop when i'm out on the road. Had one pop before not fun but not end of the world. Gravel was over the other side of a 3ft wall. Rather than move the pickup thought i'll try and be clever pick it up over the wall. Got it up with some magic, got it over, reversing off the path out onto the corner of the junction and engine died on me! Never had that happen before. Cue 20 mins of blocking half the junction waiting for someone to come jump in my van and give me a tow.

I think the engine ran out of diesel but when I topped it up there was some it, albeit low. Would it start after I topped it up would it f*ck. Took air filter off was blasting some easy start down its neck (never had to use that before on this). We tried bump starting it when on tow with my van think the van probably has a twisted chassis now! Nothing worked. Then all of a sudden once we had it parked up sprayed some easy start down, gave her a wind and off she went. Tried to go pick the bag up which was still on the junction and as soon as if lifted off the ground and engine came under strain she died. Easy start and a few winds off she goes again, gets halfway back, dies, same again then eventually got her and the pea gravel where I wanted. Left it idling for a good 5 or 10 mins after this and I will see if she starts without the easy start Monday. Anyway hope you have a laugh at my expense for being an idiot and not checking my fuel. Question though is this the symptom of running out of fuel or is there something else up with her? To be fair she is normally bomb proof which is needed with an idiot like me at the helm.

Clearly the only viable option is to sell her to me

If it's the petter PH2 Engine they are a right twat to bleed.... Individual bleed on each injector pump (separate ones for each cly) and any air will recirculate and kill it :( takes alot of getting right!

You'd love it atleast you'd know how to work on it. Even keeping it topped up with diesel tests my capabilities!

You know the fuel lift pump handle, there seems to be one for each cylinder but only one offers any resistance. Is the other broken or is it redundant? Also at the top of the engine/cylinder/head (excuse my lack of knowledge) one is leaking oil/s**t (the one who's lift pump works) the other is not leaking and the pump isn't offering any resistance. I've not been going round for 5 years operating on 1 cylinder have I?!

Try turning the engine over by hand a little if one of the lift pumps appears not to be working as they will be driven off a cam & it may be that when you tried bleeding it that the cam just happened to be in a spot where it was holding the lift pump up so giving you the feeling of no resistance.

I don't know this engine, so no experience, but if the lift pup is on the cam, you won't get any resistance.
Try turning it over half a turn and see what the pump feels like.

oh - beaten! What he said.

As said if the Injector pump is on the cam it won't offer resistance.

A PH2 won't run a dumper/The hydraulics properly on one cylinder, it'll just stall out ;) likely what you had earlier when it started then died.

Hmm ill have another look monday. I'm pretty sure that second lift pump handle has always just been loose, it even moves in and out not just up and down. I reckon i've either been operating it like this all the time i've had it though, as I can remember that lever being like that before.

Blocked fuel filter. Insufficient fuel when needed under load would be my guess!
Yep second that (y) and my experience with these old machines also says - check for 'diesel bug'🤓 Nasty black sludge:poop: is the bacteria growing in the water that always gets into diesel tanks and filters. Always dose my machines and red diesel storage tanks with diesel bug treatment stuff:p
