Newbie Benford dumper ID & gearbox/ram question :-)

Hi All,

Just about to pull the trigger on a cheap old dumper. Benford 3 ton. Thats all i know.

It has 2 issues - Leaking steering ram, and really loose gearstick, that i'm told sometimes pops out, and needs the lid lifting to pop back in. I can only find 2 FWD gears and reverse, but they move it ok.

Does this sound of great concern? I'm hoping i can get seals refurbed somewhere. Is the gearbox likely to be a pain to recon, or expensive?

Does anyone recognise this beast? The plates are all painted over.

Appreciate any advice before i get it shipped.

£1500. No vat.

I just need to move soil and stone round my 15 acres. Few gateways to dig out. A driveway to fill some big holes with stone. Then sell next summer.

Newage 85M gearbox I think (Don't think the 40M was fitted above 2t but I could be wrong) IF you have a brain with mechanical ability they are normally fixable and parts aren't horrendous... A recon box is circa £1500 however! Sounds like the selectors are worn.

Price wise, £1500 is'nt too bad, bottomish end money for a electric start dumper. You should get that back for it.

Personally I'd reseal the Ram and leave it at that.... if the gearbox goes pop then Ebay's your freind... Sold as seen IMHO.

Worked on one recently that had a similar gearbox issue. If you take the stick out there is a small metal plate on the stick itself, this was worn and loose . They are about £7 from a dealer and just push back on.
Rams are cheap enough to reseal if you can do them yourself

I like a challenge and like to think I could work it out. For now I think I'll do as you say. Reseal and run as it is. I can find the gears to move it so I'm hoping will get what I want done.
I cant afford big bucks, so I guess I'm happy to take the risk on this and recover what I can in 12 months.
How do I go about finding the right seals for this unit?
Fo you have any idea on model or year?

I would take the ram off, give it a bit of a clean, work out how it comes apart a what tools ( big stilsion) pluck out all the seals, send them to seal guys, FPE seals or the likes , new seals comes back stick it back together and back in use. Couple of days would do it

should get ram seals from Rory's link, I'd have thought ..... did my Thwaites a couple of years ago ... full seal kit was circa 40 quid IIRC and not too bad a job

Plant engineering services will send you the seals. Just clean the paint off the plates. That dumper 8s mid 90's imho. Nice unit

Thanks for all the replys. I Really appreciate it.

Made a few calls and seals are available and reasonably priced. It arrives tuesday so I'll assess it this week (if it's not too wet!).

I had to google the green beacon thing! Now I know and lol it doesnt have one! It does have a seat belt though!

It's a big beast so not something I'd considered critical. It must be pretty stable but I guess accidents happen so safety first. The 1.5t digger I bought is much more hairy! Really does jump you around if your not smooth, and the tracks do lack stability. I see why they invented expanding tracks.

Its a bit of an in joke Mike. Everything that isn't fixed to the ground seems to need a green beacon these days so that lazy site management can see you've plugged the seatbelt in - not necessarily wearing it! Rory is particularly fond of them

Looks a good old dumper, will serve you well and if you fix a few bits, it might actually make you money when you come to sell it. Good luck with the rebuild, its a bit daunting at first but once the ram comes apart it all makes sense.

They are a scurge on society. They are illegal on open highway works (Green is for doctors) and Also there are quite a few instances where a seatbelt is actually counterproductive to a well written method statement (Working near water, bogs or working with silt)

I don't even like 'em in a car .... only effective under 30mph, or if you roll the bugger .... My brother got T boned 40 years ago and had he been wearing a belt he'd have been in the ground 40 years ..... as it was he got hit out the passenger door and walked away
