Mounting a ripper?

Having just reached the stage where I can change a bucket with dropping off the top hitch too, is it posible for an experienced user to pick up a heavy ripper sitting sideways on a pallet? It weighs 168lbs. Obviously the easy way out is to make some sort of stand so the attachment sits with the pins horizontal, but is this something that it is possible to achieve without such a stand and a lot more experience?

Knock it on to its back and you will pick it up easily sideways with the tilt rotator.

The Steelwrist design is a prick, it's got a very narrow window where it will balance to be easy to pick up.

I'd do as Graham says above, you'll just pull it off the pallet trying to hook it as pictured.

personally I'd very short choke sling the furthest pin to the tip link and suspend it upright - tip of the ripper on the deck and manipulate the dipper tip between the cheeks, 'til you could get a pin into it ... choked to the link, (or hook-if it has one) would help in getting it somewhere near right and give you some movement using the link

he's gotta get it off the pallet and onto his dipper first Dan

for future, make a plate with two ears sticking up to keep it on its back with the pins horizontal - make the ears long enough to put a keep pin across it so you can lift the plate with it for loading/unloading/parking

Thanks for all the hints and tips. It lives on a pallet on a shelf, so cannot stick it in the concrete floor, ( not without making a mess )
I like the idea of a frame, but was just curious as to whether those with more skill, experience and practise would load it from the position shown.
Will give Graham's suggestion a try, when I get a bit better.

If you're that short for space that you're sticking things like a ripper onto pallet racking, I'd be investing in a little forklift. It'll save way more time than you can imagine.
