The strip it out and find out all about it is so right ...... then put it all back together without leaving any signs of having been there is good training 🙂
Just what I did with the lifton drive pump I was quoted 1500 quid for a rebuild turns out it was not that complicated took me about 6 hrs to rebuild luckily I have a machine shop at my disposal which made it easier

£300 for that is extortionate imo, but that could be to do with being in NI.

My guy done 500hour service on the CX80C, fixed door lock and set her up for more speed. £200 all in including the filters. I had the oil, think the filters were £117. Will have no problems getting him back. Plus he works for case main dealer so knows his stuff. Yes he does it at nights and weekends but suits me as the digger needs to be working through the day

Not comparable. He's a fly by night almost certainly using his bosses tools and diagnostics/dealer login. At that money he's probably nicked the filters from the spares department too! :ROFLMAO:

I jest, but seriously, how do you think his firm would feel if they knew?

It’s his own tools and vehicle. His firm knows as he buys the parts off them and as it’s not their tools or vehicle it doesn’t matter. Also it’s not like he’s stealing their work, I wouldn’t use them apart from parts 🤣

He’s getting a few quid, I’m saving by not using the dealer, win win imo

It is like he’s stealing their work though. You say you wouldn’t use them- I bet you would if you needed diagnostics that only they could do. How many others do you think he’s servicing, loosing them income whilst being perfectly happy to take their wage?

He wouldn’t work for me if I were a dealer.

If the work isn’t being directed to them in the first place, how is he stealing it? If I let a random indie mechanic service it, would that be stealing the case dealers work?
As for diagnostics, it can all be done through the screen, all fault codes, changing parameters etc can be done in cab. Only a few things require it to be plugged in, in which case I would let him do it. He isn’t allowed to take the dealership laptop home so he has his own. He used to work at lorries so it’s used for that aswell

Really simple- because the work is going to him first!

He sounds like a good, skilled guy who could make a go of it on his own. Were I the boss of that dealership, I'd be saying 's**t or get off of the pot'- and I don't think that's an unreasonable attitude.

How would you feel if your labourer bought a mini and did jobs cheaper at weekends? You know, because he didn't have the overheads that you have as an established business doing things by the book. Paying in to his pension so that he doesn't need to worry about setting up his own as he would if self employed etc. How do you know that that potential customer wouldn't have used you otherwise?

I don't think your guy would be half as cheap if he wasn't still sucking on the dealership's teat.

If I didn’t use him I would use someone else, the dealer would be an absolute last resort for me. It just so happens he works for case, I’ve known him for years and he done stuff for me when he worked at the lorry dealership, was he stealing their work?

I don’t have to worry about that, I am my labourer 🤣
He’s not sucking on a dealerships teat, if he was using their vehicle, tools etc I would agree with you, but the fact is it’s all his own stuff, so it’s not like he’s costing them anything. Not even costing them income because the work isn’t theirs to start with, not like I went to him in the dealership and said “here come to my work instead of me using the dealer”

It’s what I do!
How about one man having a very good skill set, working for a company with lots of highly paid bosses, and them saying yes to anything broken coming in for this one man to fix, no problem but the labour price gets divided by about 6 and that 1/6th is the engineers hourly rate, the company does very well by a few good people with the knowledge!
