Had a mobile fitter out to change starter and sort some electrical gremlins on terex 3 ton dumper, nothing major and could have done it myself but had a million other things to do that day. I’d diagnosed it and got him part numbers for starter. We’ve used him before a bit.

He arrived at site 12:20 swapped starter tested it, ripped out some bodges from previous owner and then had lunch spoke to his gf on phone then tested and was gone by 14:00.

Had a bill off him for £300 labour ontop of £67 travel charge. Now I’m guessing he’s charged me for full day but was only with us say 4 hours if he’s adding an hour each way labour for getting to us.

Sounds steep to me?

£75ph the going rate?

Sounds steep to me too. Strange he hasn’t put the number of hours he’s charging for 🤔

Similar experience, sounds expensive,,, I used a mobile guy here and just couldn't stomach the rates, mrs wouldn't show me his bill :) ....ended up begrudgingly doing most everything myself, great to have the brains on here to fall back on if needed :)

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
Bit of a pisstake IMHO.
's why I try to do anything and every thing myself ...... everyone thinks they're rocket scientists and worth absurd rates  for what're most often pretty basic skill levels and knowledge .... travel rates have also become ridiculous .. but we can all see why ... TBF his 75p a mile is very reasonable

Well I need to start charging for information! I could have come from Surrey to you, done the job, put a charge in for premier lodge and probably been inside that!🤔
I'd've had a day out with a bucket of spanners, meter and a few crimps for that sort of money too

My mobile fitter charges me £42/hr & £1.50/mile tx. He is methodical, conscientious, reliable & rairly stops for a cuppa, so given my hapless mechanical skills I am more than happy to pay this!!

We need a pisstake trades thread . At the moment I can’t believe some attitudes . Turning up to do a job looking for the first excuse to leave it half done and come back another day . If I could find a plumber (hint hint @pettsy) that would give the advice that we get for free on this thread I’d be wiser doing some of the jobs myself . I’m only talking basic stuff as well , Rads etc

Looks to be quite an expensive starter motor by the time he has made his margin on it, charged milage to collect it and charged a fitters rate to do so on top .... triple bubble 🤔
I might of course have spent too much time around poor farmers though 😅
Last time I had a starter motor go down on site I phoned our favourite on line supplier at lunchtime and was back to work less than 24hrs later at a cost of £160 Inc vat and delivery...
and that was for an oddball pinion count 🙂

Happy to help anyone on the forum wherever I can 👍🏻
We only work 15mile (mostly) radius and for small jobs charge £42 job fee then £49.50 per hour (calculated to 2 decimal places 😂). No travel and no mileage. Bet my quals and tickets and overheads outweigh your fitter. Makes me feel cheap 🤔 As others have said, with no breakdown of the bill it seems he doesn’t want any more work from you.
