JCB 803 hydraulic leak

Hi all,

Some of you may remember me from the post a few weeks ago where I had bought a Pel Job with a leaky engine. The good news is the dealer swapped it out for a JCB 803. The engine on this one seems great, but we have a hydraulic leak. This definitely serves me right for trying to buy a cheap digger.

However, I come here in a hope that someone can offer advise on said leak. I can see it is leaking from a hose, however the hose doesn't appear to be loose. Given the photo, does this look like a case of replacing the hose? I appreciate it is difficult to see. Any advice is appreciated.

well that was a result

that hose is delaminated - outer sheath gone and is probably on the verge of letting go - possibly ... get it changed before you have an unholy mess to contend with - or worse still it lets you down mid operation

what's the block of wood jammed against the pumps doing????

If its the top hose it appers to be leaking around the feral, so yes replace the hose and you should be fine

what model is the 803 ... they've a great rep. as a reliable tool ... if it's a super you've really 'got a tool' .. but all the 803s were decent weapons

As always thanks for the super quick responses.

Firstly, what is the bit of wood doing? I'd love to know. It's bolted on from the outside, and I'm guessing it's there for good reason. Maybe vibration was causing an issue? I'm all up for guesses.

As to which 803 it is, I'm not sure. All the decals are gone and externally it's in a pretty sorry state. Most of the glass is gone, needs a new seat cover etc. However, the engine looks in really good nick, and starts first time every time without issue. I know it's from 1996, so I'm fairly sure it isn't a plus. I've attached some pics. If anyone knows of any old 803's being broken down for parts, I'm definitely interested in a door!

Finally, the hose looks fairly easy to access at both ends, however I'm assuming that if I remove it is going to cover me in hydraulic oil. I assume I need to drain the system first? If so, does anyone know where the drain is? Secondly, where is a good place to buy a hose? I can see the hose itself is 22mm (7/8ths?) but not sure about the connectors.

Again, any help is hugely appreciated,

you'll get some leakage from each end of the hose, but doubt you'll get 'drowned' - its after the pump so'll be restricted .. plenty of rags under the ends to catch as much as you can ... a couple of bungs in the open ends would also help restrict leakage .. can get silicon bungs specifically for the job (at a price)

get the hose off and take it to your local hydraulics place and they'll match the fittings - almost certainly BSP by the looks of them

machine doesn't look too bad .. seen a lot worse.
interesting repair/mod to the near side front idler carrier/track frame ??

Yes, I saw that repair myself and was going to ask in here about it. Looks like a big plate to cover a rust hole? There is a small hole in the other side, so maybe that will need a weld job at some point
