JCB 8014 mini digger starter issues

Hi

I'm having issues with the starter on my JCB 8014. Intermittently the starter remains engaged during running and even when the ignition switch is in the off position. I removed the old starter and thought that it might be faulty. I also noticed some burring on the flywheel gear (probably as a result of the over-running) which I filed down to as smooth as possible. I've now fitted a new starter but annoyingly the starter occasionally still remains engaged. I'm concerned that any further cranking / starting will damage the new starter and the flywheel gear.

I've done some testing with a multimeter and the ignition wire reads 12v in start position and 0v in run and off positions. I've also been advised (by member of Farming Forum) I need to test this with a lamp to simulate load so will do that too.

I think it's a Tier 2 machine so doesn't have a starter relay? How do I tell? I fitted a new ignition switch not so long ago.

If the starter is sticking in the flywheel gear (possible) or sticking on the starter shaft (unlikely since it's new), I don't get how it can be still running when the key is in the off position.

Possibly the ignition is at fault. Rule that out with a manual bypass at the least.

Thanks. So just run a cable directly from the battery to the ignition connection on the starter solenoid?

It won’t matter how you do it so long as you take the supply to the ignition switch away once it’s started .
If starter disengages then ignition switch is faulty .

usual cause is a damaged ring gear though if the electrical side of things checks out (as it seems it does) ....
had a similar issue with my H80C FLT years ago - only solution was engine out and new ring gear ...
it was killing starter dogs (and starters).
Could see the cause when on the bench ..
starter spacer was wrong one (but original fit to the Hyster - part number was right) and the dog wasn't engaging far enough into the ring gear ...
had had the FLT years - whether the 'throw' spec. had been changed on the starter's pre-engage system was the fault, who knows - Lucas wouldn't admit to it - machined 4mm off the spacer face to get the dog fully engaged and never had another issue

No. I replaced the ignition switch a year + ago and problem only started a few weeks ago....

It’s worth inspecting both the ring gear and pinion, could be they are burred, but I’m not sure why it would stay in all the time, it would let go at some point!
