Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

Yes - more money in my pocket! Bloody thing was costing a fortune in hydraulic hoses which all seemed to be happening less than 8hrs apart from each other.....
It actually went back at the start of May and I've missed it for one day since then. Its in Poland now according to Livelink - far enough for my 5 min 5 mile warranty to have expired
Wow! That's enough to confirm this thread title .
If you can't make it work in the money basket of Britain then anyone else is either on council money or out their dad's pocket 🫣

I got the impression you kept it fairly busy or were you using because you had it rather than because of necessity? Not missing it suggests the former.
The work for a bigger machine when you're known for smaller kit is so hit and miss. Last year, it did more days than any of my other machines, and in previous years the school work has kept it more than justified. But this year the bigger jobs just don't seem to be there so it would only have sat around for the summer anyway. I have plans for another backhoe so wont be joining the dark(duck)side just yet. But currently I am back to mini's only, and I have to say, it reminds me how profitable they are - if not the most glamorous of machines to be in

That's where I ended up and why the 432 went after 8k hours prity trouble free. Iirc it was about 5k or 6k hours it had a transmission issue where you'd got 2nd gear or 2nd gear but other than that it was just wear and tare

I still look and still tempted every time I see another for sale. I do still get jobs for a backhoe but as I've said on here before, I can hire one with a driver and put abit on top. So it's a win win.

The concept isn't dead for me, I'll be back with something that is more suited to my work. According to facebook, I need to be driving one on sticks to really get the most out of one....
Day rate prices for them is awful when you consider the price of replacements, they cost more to maintain, and they just aren't valued by clients who only really know excavators and dumpers - so that's what they ask for. Its an uphill struggle trying to push the backhoe in todays world. But I'm not giving up just yet. On the right job on price - its a seriously profitable machine. I just need to set my business up right, and the machine....

My lads just working on the Defender classic . My dad's brother gave it to dad to but he never got to start it 😕. So my lads building in memory ☺️. Dad did the big Ferrari F1 car when he was in hospital and then hospice and started the Ford GT.
We've donated the F1 to the hospice who are auctioning it 🤗.

For anyone who's practical but stuck in bed they are absolutely awesome to keep brain and hands active . Dad absolutely loved it. Also did the New defender when he was in Christie's a year or two back.
I did the F1 when I did my leg many years ago kept me sane for about 4 days

I'm sure a mate used a company local about 10 months ago at £38 and hour inc fuel!

Its a thing of the past for me :(
My last one went nearly 10 years ago.. they are expensive beasts to keep going for sure, wait until you need tyres!
I always ponder another one again but I’m in and out of the cab far too often to be climbing up 3 steps. Re-confirmed when wondering around euro auctions last month having ago in some - same said for ducks they are for sitting in all day while someone else does the leg work!

Wow that's really bad. Chatted to a long time owner op the other day when buying a lovely old bucket he had for sale. He'd been on the same site for 15 years🤯 Was out at £40/hr dry hire. Bought a new machine every 5ish years. If you're already setup in life I guess it earns you a living but not much more.
As he said though, they do pay every day rain or shine so he takes the slightly less rate for the more long term work. 15 Years on one job is a long time, he's never even had his Pro model out of 3rd gear😆
I think they need to be £55/hr now with fuel minimum. You can easily justify more but it has to be the right work or you're pulled down against an 8 tonner and a dumper on ball busting UK hire rates and an agency driver who doesn't turn up.

I’d make it work at 40/hr plus fuel on a steady job like that 😉 you’re not on hire for that long without perks!
BUT what I loved about my BHL work was the variety and getting out and about, one day I’d be in Lincoln, next day Derby next Nottingham.. variety is the spice of life!! I cause some traffic jams for sure haha
