Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

Well having had my updated shed prices back - my wheel digger aspirations need to firmly take a back seat. Going to be all out of magic beans for a while. Talking of wheel diggers and backseats- Found this one from 40 years ago of me sat on the front seat while father is messing with the back actor. That old beast is long gone, but it taught me to drive (and with no brakes) One day I’ll get my hands on a power major with over sized wheels and power steering and pulley drive.

Just been to local quarry to pick up a load. Nice to see them running a 580 and newer 590. 580 is on slicks. 590 working hard on loading wagons and a big screen bucket on the back. Wide bucket on the 590 will only just fit to tip into the TT2515. I could happily spend a few weeks there just moving stockpiles around with radio on, would be way better than the office!

Nice way to make a living I reckon.I very nearly went the same way myself about a year ago, a friend of mine was selling up her dads businessof many years, ran 2 trucks 18 and 7.5 toners all direct from quarry. Was very tempted but chickened out in the end, kind of wish I had’nt now,the biggest turn off was the amount of slow/bad payers on credit account,f##k that as my wife put it!I just fancied running about in a truck for a bit😁

I had a meeting with my new shed man today. Looks like I might be getting somewhere. Means I will have 22 holes to dig soon. 900x900x900. I don't fancy it with E10, and unless I get my hands on the old case backhoe that I am toying with, I will need to hire something in. What is the optimum machine for this task? Level site and clay/shillet with a bit of stone at the deep end. I probably have option of hitachi 3.3 / 4.5t or a 8t case. Trying to get a 2.7 bobcat on demo but doubt it will tie in time wise.

Entirely depends on the ground.
Proper 8t buckets are to big to dig a 900mm square hole. Alot of 8t run 3cx buckets but I don't know if they are any better. Had to get the engineer to change the pads to longer and narrower before to accommodate 8t buckets as ground was so dry in heavy clay smaller machines wouldn't touch it.

8 ton case with a 900mm bucket would be my choice

Smaller digger is better for post holes, dug hundreds of 3' x 3' down 5' deep with my 1.5 tonne. A tidy hole saves a lot of money on concrete and is easier to set the bolts on so there is no real advantage in "ripping them out" with a bigger machine.

They will all dig that no problem, or get matey back in on the bhl for a day or tw
I’ve a 7 bay at home , that’s got 5 posts on each gable.. so I’d assume his is 8bay? So maybe 160ft by 80ft?
It’s a 7 bay with a height change so extra pair at each gable and a pair to divide the 2 halves. 15ft bays so only 45x105ft
