Probably a future collectors item.
There was a big EU thing about companies having to get an average emissions, Aston did a team up with Toyota and planned to sell a few thousand and ended up selling 300 or so
Wasn’t it along the line of, buy a DB9 and get a handbag(Aygo) for free.. ish

Today was test drive day… and I managed to have a go with a nats whisker under 3500kg being towed...

Trailer 805kg (3500GVW)
Disco4 (2583kg kerb)
3388kg plus about 50kg in boot.. 3438kg

Dealership was Halliwell Jones Chester, friendly and professional also accommodated me wanting to have a go with a trailer. As we tow on and off road a lot for work..

The Grenadier was pretty much as expected similar to a Defender in some ways.

I’m not having a go as I do like it and have been on the list since 2021 but honest personal experience below..

What I really liked…

Diesel engine smooth
Looks amazing I think in person
Wheels at the rear are right in the corners so it will be awesome off road for a LWB
Steering wheel very nice
Gear selector area and switch gear in the roof is very nice.
The quietness of the cab
Level going round corners No roll
High position on the road.
Smooth gear changes
Arm rests on doors (no arm out the window)
Reverse cam made hooking up easy in first go..
Mats and flooring idea is great
Body panels and door shut felt quality
Twin tow electrics and the option of other hitch being inserted
Met another person who had a Grenadier and just drove from Scotland, nice people I think with Grenadier and have a feeling it’s going to have a good owners club / vibe. Already the flashing each other on the road was experienced by me on the test drive where oddly we saw two Grenadiers in the wild..
22mpg but that’s a new tight engine and with trailer for part of journey so happy with that I would expect 22-24mpg real world for my driving.

What I’m puzzled by or kinda don’t like (please don’t think I’m slagging it off as I do really like it)

Reverse cam strangely off centre (worked fine like just wierd why not central above the hitch)
When pulling away it’s not got much go could do with 300-310bhp gears are low even in high. Lacks oomph. (Maybe the smoothness makes it feel less torquey 🤷‍♂️)
Lots of revving look down 31mph…
Speed in the middle display, why not in the little screen in front of you that only does indicators etc, that would be cool switchable Miles/KM too.
The seats are great like that there’s no electric and can wash out but no manual adjustable or air pump lumbar support.
The footrest for the left foot puts your left leg higher than your right when on the pedals, minor but with 30k to 40k a year will this uneven position cause lower back issues ?? No idea but wierd it’s not level giving square seated posture.
Being tall (6’3”) seat is back and wheel out at max not quite enough for me so had the seat more forward than usual to be comfy which it was compared to a defender but not as comfy as disco 4.
Stereo is OK totally functional but not a patch on Meridian or similar unfortunately. It does apple car play wirelessly but android you will need a wire. For a work truck it’s more than adequate.
Light Grey hard plastics on sides of centre console etc. (why not black or option)
Soft touch pleather around the door handles unlikely to be intact at 200k miles and 8 years could have been wipe down or Alu.
Where will a Tachograph go ? 🤷‍♂️ needed to be legal for us.. I was so absorbed it didn’t occur till afterwards.
At least 3.6 turns lock to lock been spoilt with an overfinch 2.9 box on the td5 defender.. could have been tighter ratio I think as it’s so smooth maybe a quick ratio mod will come up in the aftermarket or a longer arm or something..

Towing/Driving

The drive was fine suspension was really nice with no load. Towing heavy it pulled the trailer fine like a Hilux or similar but I knew the weight was there, not as good towing 3.5T as the disco 4 by a long way. The tail was somewhat wagging the dog after 45mph rear springs are fairly soft I think which was a bit un nerving getting to 60. Towing with my defender is more shore footed with that kind of weight on and you get less feedback from the trailer probably cause the springs are twice the size and rock hard filling removers 😂
Maybe just need to get used to it..

Overall

Really nice well built machine, will be signing the contract over the weekend and look forward to it coming.. some very nice features, quiet enough to have a phone call not like the old defender, The guys at the dealership are great, the finish and build quality appears to be good.

If I keep it longer term once I’ve got used to it what will I do? Bell Auto Services map for an extra 50/60bhp 🤞 maybe see if can map the gearbox to be more punchy. Try and get some stiffer rear springs for towing heavy and an adjustable drop plate, upgrade the speakers and add a slimline sub somewhere to give a more rounded sound.

Looking forward to having one of what I think will be a very popular and good looking practical 4x4 to join the others at work, think as a Defender replacement it’s great but it won’t replace the old Disco 4 for heavy towing long distances and off road mix they’re worlds apart. Was kinda hoping it would be more towards disco 4 in a defender style if I’m honest I think we a decent remap and some mods maybe it could be.

Surely the logical replacement for a disco 4 would be a new defender though??

School Fees have ended my interest!!! May be in 10 years time when the first owners start to part with them!!! I do think for many they will become a long term keeper as there is nothing out there in the gap they are filling!!
Deffo was my thinking ..having followed it for years and had a reservation for 2 years I was gutted ...but back to pickups let's see what new amaroks like

For me……they all have become over priced. I will stick to the Iveco for towing. Got to decide what to use when my old D1 gives up. Got another D1 in the barn along with a Range Rover Classic. I think the classic would make a great everyday tool carrier!!

I really don't know what all the fuss is about. You want a comfy, powerful tow vehicle- Disco 4. You want a proper work vehicle that you can tow with and chuck stuff in the back- Iveco tipper or a pickup.

The vehicle only gets you to the job, and there's no perfect one so you may as well have a few. I'd sooner spend the money on the machines that actually earn the coin. If the van was your earner (courier, etc) then that's a different ball game.

Other than that get a nice car and/or motorbike for outside of work!

No problem if for test purposes, which I'd quite say it was.

Its more if your towing a digger to a job where that comes in.
