Impact wrench - for auto and u17 digger

Hello folks,

I have been scratching my head looking for an impact gun. It won’t see much use, but when I use it I want it to do its job.

I will use it for diy mechanical stuff, such as smaller engine machines, car/bike maintenance, and for things like removing bucket teeth on my U17 Kubota.

I am thinking that battery powered is necessary, so I can use it where I need it without having to get the machine to power outlet.

Ideally I would like enough control to put wheel lug nuts on snug and torque by hand. But the torque on my 4x4 wheels is 140nm, so I don’t need to fit truck wheels or anything big.

There are budget brands that get good review, but I have never regretted buying Dewalt, Makita or Bosch Professional tools, even though more pricey.

I have no modern battery power tools, as my old corded tools seem to last forever. (I have a Makita NiCad drill, that is 20 years old and is still doing a good job.). I will be buying batteries /charger etc so I’m not tied to one brand.

Bucket bolts will often require a heavy duty wrench unless changed regularly. Even the 3/4 gun won’t touch them a lot of the time, doubly so if they are not coach bolt style and retained by a square punched in the bucket.

Aside from that, for general use up to and including pickup truck wheel nuts, you simply won’t beat the Milwaukee M12 gen 3. I regularly use it on m16 stuff like breaker top hats.

You don’t need a gun as large as you posted for what you are suggesting. Milwaukee knocks the spots off Makita in the impact wrench department, I gave my Makita gun like you posted away as the m18 mid torque made it near enough redundant.

Go down to Big Red Tools .
They'll sort you out exactly what you need
I'd go for a rail of 1/2 impact sockets as well.
Milwaukee ones are cracking value imo.

i have exactly the same amazing the power it has for a small 12v compact gun a proper little powerhouse.

Yep I will visitv1 day.
They do other gear too which I've tried to find online but to no avail.
They do seem to have gone not so competitive in the last 6 months.
Most of my gear was between powertoolmate and them,but now not as close

Personally unless you've loads of 3/8 sockets I'd go for 1/2
1/2 for 17mm and upwards imo.
3/8 is for general spannering. Thats what we always worked off in the shop.

If you do go 3/8 make sure it's the compact NOT sub compact as that's much less torque

I'd go 1/2"- you're never using that kind of gun for 3/8 work IMHO. Even a 10mm 1/2" socket is not too bulky.

Fwiw I'm a dewalt salesmans wet dream, even most of my work clothes are DeWalt, ive of course got an 18v 1/2" gun, and its a brilliant gun. But, due to wanting something dewalt didn't make at the time ive got some 12v Milwaukee, including the 3/8 gun. it's simply brilliant, its the most used tool in the workshop, its amazing what it will undo for the size of it. I only get tge dewalt out when really necessary and tbh due to the fact i forget to turn the power down I'll usually end up breaking things, will easily strip/snap an m16 if your not careful. i know thats operator error but i honestly rarely use it now. The little milwaukee is just so light and handy, and you can always crack stuff with the breaker bar first. lets face it, dont matter what gun you've got, at some point the scaff tube and hot spanner are coming out away

Got it wrong posted up 1/2 this is the 3/8" - I dont have one and was looking at makita but considering the reviews looks like this is the one to choose...

yeah, the 502x just means that it comes with two batteries in the kit.
