I think the colonel is probably right. However much morally you want to stand up to Putin, is it really worth thousands of civilian deaths, most of the population dispersed abroad, probably never to return when and the country reduced to ruins? If they had agreed to remain neutral Putin would have probably stopped at Crimea.

That's way too simplistic.
Ukraine wasn't part of NATO, so was effectively neutral as demonstrated by the lack of international action when Putin invaded Crimea.
Ukraine was years away from being admitted to NATO and Putin has demonstrated why Ukraine would want to join.

Personally I think this is too far off topic for a humour thread.
