late '70s ... there was a guy arrested in Hindhead, Surrey ...
main drag went through it with a major cross roads for the IIRC Portsmouth road (long before the Hog's Back tunnel) ..
traffic light controlled and this old boy crossed regularly for some reason ..
got fed up of ppl jumping the lights and coming at him, whilst the green man was lit for him to cross, so took a 2lb ball pein hammer with him one day and was smashing windscreens of anything that jumped the lights -- 'til the old bill arrived and hauled him away ...
pretty sure he sort of got away with it - anyone with damage could make a civil claim against him, which no-one did as they'd have had to explain to the man in the wig as to why they'd been hit
he got a LOT of publicity and it quelled the problem for a while apparently
