Hydrogen - the fuel of the future?

I know this topic has been touched on in several past threads but thought it needed its own home as its only going to become more and more prevalent as the move away from fossil fuels gains momentum. As I type, its looking like hydrogen is going to be the way forward for plant and heavy equipment and is where I'm most interested in seeing development. JCB and others are onto this in various ways with hydrogen fuel cells and converted diesel engines being the two most popular methods of burning it. However, both sides will admit that we are going to need an awful lot of hydrogen to make these machines run, JCB have just signed up to a deal with an Australian producer, but it seems very wasteful to ship it across the planet we are trying to save....
A forward thinking African country might have just found a new use for the vast amount of sun soaked desert and coastline they currently have at their disposal..... seems a good idea to me

And then there are these guys who are looking to use fuel cells to run big mining dump trucks. Personally I think this is an expensive way to do it, as it converts hydrogen to electricity via science and a "fuel cell" that requires replacement every year or so. The electricity is fed to batteries which in turn is used to power the wheels. Thats a lot of resources required to build all that, as opposed to JCB's idea of converting the existing ICE. But we are still in the experimental stage with this.

Yes,hydrogen is taking over from lithium as the current'in thing',JCB looking to it for power,JCB heir has set up a hydrogen investment fund,Eua lol moving in that direction,Orcp another AIM share looking to a coal/ hydrogen project in Pakistan,worth investigating

Almost certainly the way forward for heavy goods and plant. The game changer looked to be green energy being able to be used to fuel the manufacture. As always there can be a curved ball. I do wonder with the incoming rise in electric cost that the green energy will more likely be diverted into battery storage to take advantage of the price rise.

Only if naivety provails. There are far better options for energy storage until battery storage is far more refined it is a massive waste of resources. When in reality having hydrogen plants next to the electricity production points plus water storage is the better foreseeable option

Reality is it will come full circle in a bit.

The tech is out there to pull Co2 in, and turn it back to a diesely substance.... it's just energy hungry as a process. BUT as we can see from "green" hydrogen you need to put energy into that too.

Had reasonable holding couple years back,bout 2 million shares,was convinced the cpec power project was imminent,now it's coal/ hydrogen and Aus gold still reckon chance of 2+p

there's a hydrogen refuelling station in Abergavenny .... right next door to where my old yard was ....
Monmouthshire CC installed it at massive taxpayer cost 'cos there's some guy in Brecon area (Powys CC) developing a hydrogen powered 'thing' - (you gotta see it)

AFAIK MCC have no plans in the near future to utilise the facility for their own vehicle fleet ? and don't think there is even the facility to purchase fuel at the site as 'joe bloggs' ...... ....... great use of council tax payers money

Tbf as ugly and silly looking as those river simple cars are, there design philosophy is the way that car manufacturing should be going. They are a million times better than teslas that have no actual interest in environmental friendly cars and are just a fashion accessorie. And best of all its a British concept.

Trouble with sustainability is its been hijacked by greedy people out to profit in ways that cannot be compared to henry ford.

Back then he had a new market, the previous technology was incomparable to his own and thus his only barrier to sale was price point.... Ironically the motor industry at the time did exactly the same thing as the current "Eco" industries, lobbying governing bodies to intervene and scupper his market by effectively outlawing it.

The idea of a company wishing to be a "subscription only" service should alarm anyone when taxpayers money is involved.

The bigger ponderment is HVO. "In practice, these renewable diesels lower greenhouse gas emissions by 40-90%"

If you split the difference and said it knocks it 50% we could effectively cut emissions from transport in half overnight...... We could do it in a few months.....
