Well China have stepped up to the mark and said that they can do it in 5 years and at a fraction of the cost, it’ll serve us all right if that happens.

Hard to say if they will, if they try to flood the job with people like they did with their hospital/prison/deathcamp (insert own interpretation) technically they'll have to pay everyone at least the minimum wage, then on top of that either hire or import all the machinery.
If they had a similar number of people (4000) on it on minimum wage (8.72) for 12 hour shifts, that's a wage bill of £418560 per day

I hope they do - we as a country need to get our s**t together IMO. We are massively encumbered by rules and regulations that makes getting anything done both by the book and efficiently pretty much impossible. What companies would want to invest here at present?!
There are tens of thousands of people employed to police and implement paperwork exercises - none of these people’s labours go towards producing anything, they just add cost and time to projects. It’s all gone too far, and the whole HS2 gravy train is the ultimate example.

Issue is that all large projects are now run by complete fuckwits that know nothing about how to do the job and everything about how to talk about the job..... On some jobs that have minimal budgets they are forced to stop talking utter bollocks and allow the adults to come in and sort the job out from the ground! Several of our jobs to large (multinational) end clients have ended this way.... eventually with the morons retreating to either the site office or there main office and only coming out to moan about f****ng beacons, CE, OEM or emissions when it suits

Trouble with HS2 is the infinite f****ng pot of money and the decision to set up HS2 LTD, whilst encouraging all sorts of daft constraints on machinery, men etc. The Fuckwits have unlimited resources which the yes men wankers in mainstream plant hire will pander too until the money runs out! We all know that the big plant firms in the UK will provide whatever utter bollocks a office dwelling blind penis shaped rodent requires in order to keep the money flowing.... Regardless of the actual outcome of the job!

HS2, Hinkley and every bypass job is the same ATM..... has been for years. And the Amount of Brown envelopes used by wankers to get good men thrown off jobs and justify the continued use of s**t mainstream labour is horrific. We all know it!

Lastly the men with the brains in this country are gone, particularly with the sorts of Bulk earthworks required for HS2.....

Trouble with the big projects is they go to the big companies who are probably under pressure to enjoy large numbers of people cos that keeps unemployment down. They also make up a lot of the h+s sh**e which means more people need to oversee people overseeing people etc........... this heaps cost on the job picked up by the taxpayer and before you know it you get ridiculous costing schemes like hs2. Annoying thing with a lot of the safety side of things like 4 or 5 different coloured beacons boxing rings on diggers close to banning dumpers etc (could go on for ever) if those actually doing the work said f*ck it how could it be enforced. By the time the construction industry sees it it'll be too late.

Minimum wage is for hourly work, you get round that by putting people on salary.

Dont think you swore enough Rory... seriously, the game is f***ed!
Yes, well and truly.

The amount of backstabbing by independent contractors is something to behold of late! Should be having each others back and supporting each other rather than slagging each other off  but it's a sign of the times, work is drying up for some!

I almost hope they do come and show us how to do it, but if they have to conform to all the bullshit we have to I'm sure they won't want to play.

I work for some big companies and have to do fixed price and that is it. I know what I do is relatively simple, but it is only me working out prices in the evening/weekends whilst doing proper work during the day. These big companies have who office blocks full of people and years of just working on the one tender. How can they then get multi times the original cost to do the job? I understand there things round the margin that were not priced for, but really it is insane that every big project goes so far over budget and time and no one is ever held accountable because it is only government money. There is no such thing as government money, it is all taxpayers money and I for one am sick of them wasting my money.

Watching the videos of the hospital I think their would be a lot of cut corners
I know they have a very good hi speed train network but then the west would never get to hear of any problems
There is no doubt that it can be done better than the current rubbish but I think the problem lies deeper
We have a culture in this country that you have to go to university and hands-on jobs are the lowest form of work
Therefore the intelligent people skip the hands-on training loosing out on valuable experience and the hands on work ends up being a dumping ground for idiots (not everyone in the job by any means but there are alot of people on large sites just to make up the numbers )
Therefore they have to be babysat the whole time and can't be trusted not to get hurt on purpose for a claim
If we made hands-on jobs and skills something to be proud of we might get intelligent people working their way up like they use to and the people would know and understand the job

I work with a lot a eastern Europeans
Alot of them have been to university but can earn more money grafting in the uk and the difference on site is amazing
You can hold a more intelligent conversation with someone who has only spoken English for 6 months than some English blokes

I started working on farms and when I started to work on site it amazed me just how thick lazy and entitled some people are in comparison to farm staff
And I'm guessing it's down to the lack of passion for the job

A senior engineer/planner once told me "Price for the Job the Customer wants, Charge for the job the customer Needs!" alluding to the fact that once the contract is won on the customers tender you can f**k them over left right and centre for the things they didn't budget on to make a profit!

I refuse to do it, only leads to issues down the line when the client is running out of money and can't complete the job! But I can see why it happens repeatedly on large government contracts. Once a Contracts Manager has the client over a bench they are able to get the Vaseline out and take every penny they can  when it goes wrong they will go the other way and try to screw those at the bottom of the supply chain asking for extras verbally and then denying knowledge, or trying to alter contracts and forge signatures! I have seen both happen!

I'm fully sick of the industry. Sooner i'm out the better but unfortunately until I have devised and paid for my alternative income generation then I have to keep soldiering on..... fortunately "weekly payments" is the 2020 phrase, we are being asked to do more and more but I'm weary that alot of things are heading for a bump this year.

and the fact that they consider the world owes them a living ...... just for breathing  🤬 🤬 🤬

I speak to people like that on a regular basis everything is everyone else's fault
They keep complaining about the foreigners on sites A) being here and B) getting paid well and going on about Brexit sending them home so English people get paid more but they don't seem to grasp that they are here and paid more because they are skilled and sending them home isn't going to put the wages of the ignorant unskilled and lazy up

I had a 1 day hire the other week and the groundworkers were useless...totally and utterly.
They were calling site agent alsorts beacuse he was coming round a checking the work had been done right....and making them alter it so its right. They are paid to do the job right first time but somehow they thought they could get paid for just doing it any old how and not bothered if it was right or wrong.
The site agent was totally sound and he wasnt mardy one bit and good to work for.

no one in their right mind would even bother to try to get the job
Why would you? Sounds like a complete farce, I would rather sit at home than jump through all those hoops to try and make a pound. The problem is it just takes one person/company to roll over and then it’s expected of everyone else to do the same.
