hello!

I'm in the process of looking at getting a duck (16 ton) to use in the place of a telehandler for site work (house builder).

We need to replace the telehandler and after watching what Duckgirl can do with a 16 tonner I think it would be loads more usefull for us.

They are a bit unusual here in the UK, im struggling to find out the ins and outs. Can they go on the road ? Do they need a number plate ? Can they tow a dump trailer on the road ? does it need air brakes ?

I'm looking abroad in europe to buy one.

Can travel on the road will need road registered, but can’t tow a trailer so no need for air brakes
I’ve run them for years on my 5th one now but you do need a steady hand I’ve seen good track machine drivers made a fool of in a duck

Oh by the way duck girl is a very very good operator who has been doing it for a few years now I met her after she had finished her stint in Sweden nice lady

What hours are the volvo EW160's good for ? Seem to be a wild variation from 5000 -20000 on the used market ?

What to look out for when buying, apart from having the mechanic give it a look over ?

if you want to use it primarily as a handler ..... DO NOT buy a mono boom ..... VA/TAB (Variable Angle/Triple Articulation Boom) is so much more 'flexible' , particularly with forks on (or a bucket/grab too )

Cheers, in terms of hours on a volvo e160. is more than 10k on a 7-9 year old too high ? Personally wont be putting many hours on it. Maybe 5 a week on average if that doing site work.

main issue with those sorts of hours is wear in the pumps and hydraulic system .... engine issues is the least of your worries .... pins, bushes ring gear, transmission components and general wear and tear will be high, no matter how well looked after it is

i think i'm going to take a punt on a below 10k hours duck using the logic that if there are working 15k ones being sold it will have enough life in it for us!

As with most our kit, we started with worn out and traded up to new over the years. I expect the duck will be the same if it proves as usefull as i'm planning.

when I was duck hunting I set myself a 6k-ish limit on hrs ..... subject to general condition, etc. ...... saw a few dogs , with less on and it's surprising how they do 'rack up' when you use it .. have put about 1000 on mine over the last four years of ownership ..... and it's only used intermittently ..... IMHDO ... you'll not go far wrong with an Atlas .... or a Hydrema

I wouldn't be afraid of high hours personally if the machine is straight and genuine. Especially if your only looking at low hours per year yourself. If you are looking at high hours Volvos though I'd be looking at the C series rather than the D series. The D's are a great machine too, but with a lot of Regeneration s**t on them that can be troublesome.
Have it checked over by a trusted mechanic, and don't buy with out seeing it. Even a plane ticket can be cheap compared to some parts.
