Hiring plant out

Does anyone hire anything out self drive?
been thinking about getting a few bits to possibly hire out, weve got wagons out and about most days so might be a handy way of not being empty and make a few quid at the same time.
im Not quite sure what I want tho. Maybe a 5/6/7/8 ton size machine or an odd thing that you sometimes need but don’t want to buy sort of machine.
I thought something not run of the mill but requires a bit of a premium, or is it more hassle than it’s worthand I’m just making work for my self?

I am always amazed how cheap machines can be hired for & I wouldn’t want to compete this said if you can make the figures stack up then go for it.

Not sure where you are in N Wales, but with TPH on the door rates aren`t going to be much

Personally for the small scale operator who also relies on his machines to be in good nick for his own work- I'd say it's a hiding to nothing- I guess it depends how much you want the money from it- I'd prefer my machines sat still then let someone else use them- especially given the hire rates are crap

My simple understanding was it's all about the buying right and selling right? The hiring bit in between is an extra if you get it right?
Some one reckoned a bit back one decent outfit was selling their Kubotas 1.5ts for more than they paid 18 months/3 years before...? Buying in bulk etc etc obvs atm it's all a bit bonkers but this was prior to covid.

You need to work it from @doobin point of view. Buy machine on finance and as long as it makes more hired out over the 3 or 4 years the finance runs than the finance payments you're making a few quid or at least its not costing you. Multiply that by a large number of machines and you're few quid is turning into quite a lot. Then if you factor in bulk purchasing and big discount then selling at 3 or 4 year old possibly for nearly what they cost they can be making a decent wedge. The thing is they've driven the rates down so far unless you've got the amount of kit the bigger companies have you've no chance.
I hire out my micro 1.5 tonner and 1 ton dumper (my least used machines by myself) to a select few who i can trust and for a rate better than bigger companies (but day or 2 hire isn't as easy from them) it's handy to make a few quid rather than them be stood but it wouldn't pay if i didn't already own the machines rather justifies having them for my own convenience.

Thing is too. As a contractor working out depreciation by the hour you'd reckon on a full day's work. IE a mini from new- 3000 hrs when you might trade it in would give you 375 8 hour days. From this you can easily deduce what you need to earn from the machine. If it's nots a full day's machine running then bonus.
But plant hire especially in the small sector, A machine out for the week probably won't be putting in full 8 HR shifts. More likely for a few hrs here and there with landscapers/builder types. So suddenly from 3000 hrs you'd get way more hire days then as a contractor. Just the way I think of it anyway

Remember the tale of the terrace house down our way?
Bloke worked at sellafield or salwick...had been nicking paint and stuff for years out of the skips...they found out and checked his house
rumour has it they basically demolished it as it was radioactive
