1-3t dumper for a short duration hire (two weeks or less) is £140/week or £80 for the day
Got a 3t swivel on hire long term for £105/week. And at that money its just not worth owning one.
Rollers are near £200/week for me if I remember correctly. But I rarely hire one in all honesty. I'm a heavy plate compactor (250kgs upwards) kinda guy as they are more manoeuvrable for the kind of work I tend to do and patio's don't need compacting anymore than that!
I too am keeping myself open to potentially taking advantage of cheaper kit in a recession. But I am certainly in no rush to spend - need to see light at the end of the tunnel first.

To my mind you can't get much cheaper (reliable) kit than brand new at f**k all interest over 5 years.

That said, last week probably wasn't the best time to sign a deal on a new 1.8t tracked dumper... Wheeled dumpers are peanuts as said. But tracked suits the majority of my work and if you need to hire one desparately when it's wet you would never be able to!

Very glad I put all my machines on 5 years though, my monthly finance spend is just £1200. Might be a problem for some but that's secured against the machines themselves at the end of the day, and I own dozens of other bits and pieces and have skills that can all make money even when times are tight.

Welding (mend and make do) will be on the up in a recession.

What's the best mini digger bargain you've seen yet? I don't think people are anywhere near desparate enough for real bargains yet.

GIve it a couple months like this and i think there will be a lot of bargains to be had, all depends how hard it is to get your hands on these cheap gov loans.

My thoughts exactly.

Plenty will be bitten by the loans however. The government say they will guarantee 80%, but that's a guarantee to the bank, after they've made you bankrupt trying to get 100% from you first.

Those who use the loans to continue a zombie business with no real assets will only delay their demise by a year or so.

Its a great deal Doob, but I cant say I agree with you in 70% of cases. Let me explain it as I see it.
Take a 3t swivel dumper. Nothing special, not road registered or hydrostatic, just a 3t manual dumper. Worth around £15k new.
Lets say you keep it for 10 years and its worth £5k when you sell it. You service it every year at £250, Insure it £250/year, store it when not on site £500 (which is a fairly low estimate assuming its out on site most of the time). It might need a couple of new bits, tyre etc in its life time, lets assume £1000. Over 10 years that dumper owes you £25k and you sell it for £5k so its cost you £20k.

At the higher rate of £140/week to hire it needs to be out for 2.7 years flat out to pay that back. Now over 10 years you would hope to have it out on hire for more than 2.7 years, however when I look at my dumper usage, its surprising how much you always need a different machine, 1t here for access, 6t there for bigger sites and I've deliberately chosen a 3t dumper for my example as its probably one of the most used ones with my 2.8t excavator.
So by hiring the dumper, I have the flexibility to off hire it when I don't need it, saving storage, I don't have to service or maintain it and I don't pay anywhere near £250/year for my hired in plant insurance. My point being that if you used one all the time, its worth buying and taking the risk on getting the future work to keep it busy. But with hire rates as cheap as they are (and I'm sure someones getting better prices than I am here even with my £105/week long term rate) its not worth the hassle owning.

That's why I bought my 8026, its out earning almost every day. And why I wont be upgrading my old 801, because its not out much and I'd rather pay my mortgage off than have a fleet of brand new machines to play with (as nice as it would be!) Everyone has different circumstances and a different business model. If new kit on finance suits you and you are keeping it busy then its a no brainier. But it wouldn't work for Rory for example who has a totally different business model to you and I.

i think your being a bit harsh on the prices their olly. For starters the entire cost is a tax writeoff at 20% and a good condition one will be more like 8k+ just look at the rusting heaps diggers that are selling for 9k+

To be fair I'll agree with olly regarding dumpers they lose so much money when there 4/5 year old i couldn't justify buying new, mainly because I'd rather put that money into a new digger (as he says something you use more). Having said that relying on hiring whenever you need something isn't always convenient i sometimes only need a dumper on a job for half a day hence owning a 1,3 and 6 ton dumper. On new machines and 0% finance most of the ones offering the best deals are arguably the makes which will have the lowest resale value.

I do agree with you re wheeled dumpers- I bought because it's tracked and therefore niche, as I mentioned in my post. Wheeled I'd buy secondhand or hire as dirt cheap like I mentioned.

My diggers are all set up to run a multitude of attachments. Would never go back to hiring, even the micro. Nothing like having it there when you need it for ten minutes to save two hours labour either.

One point - where do you get your hired in plant from?! Minimum I have ever seen it is £570/year!
Personally I got me a new 3t swivel as with my maths it worked out about the same total cost to buy over hiring one.. but it’s mine and I don’t have to piss around hiring one, and when everything is done and dusted I’ll have a free dumper(all be it old but gold) 🤠

I bought my 3t straight tip 10 years ago for 4.5k its a 2002 and its wanted maybe £400 spending on it - use it most of the time - getting bit knarly in the skip and worn in the pivot buy still maybe worth 2k - have a small tracked dumper that have had about same amount of time that I paid 5k for - it as had about 1k spent on it and prob still worth 2k

Both in shed when I want them.

Cant have done so bad there

What's the most expensive thing to hire vs cost. I reckon wacker plates or cement mixers

Dumpers are something you either want to be hiring, or buying a rough one to sit on site being hired out.

I'm not ashamed to say, neither of my dumpers are frontline hire machines... Why? Well the cost of boots on a dumper being used to 90% is about the same as the hire cost over the course of a month! I can get the Road Registered machine, stick a driver on it at £35/hr and it earns. And trust me you will burn a set of tyres on road work in a month if your moving gear!

My 2t and 6t are strictly for odd use.... I may even stick a set of road tyres on the 6t when the current set wear out as I have no intention of using it on demanding sitework.

Regarding tracked dumpers....Value is in the undercarriage! Yes muppets will pay daft money... but they are only worth having if the tracks and drives are right!
