Green lights are probably only of use to management to help convince themselves of their competency.

An awful lot of operators sit on top of the buckled up seat belt and it never gets used. Plant hire companies only check that the green beacon is working not the functionality of the restraint.

I tend to get hired in to operate diggers on "challenging" sites and am finding that it is becoming increasingly common to have to struggle to get myself securely seated !

Now that it is routine to take the piss out of the green beacon it also makes it quite hard to ask for a functioning lap belt without looking like a snow flake. Don't think some people realise how hard it is to glue the backside to the seat on steep slopes

Blue is for reversing, and is mainly quarry spec! which is likely why the dozers had them. Have fitted the blue ones to loading shovels before.

I came along the M27 again tonight. By the time machines have several orange beacons or a full orange light bar, green beacon, purple beacon, full work lights back front and on the boom I think the Christmas tree idea makes about as much sense.

My machine has a red beacon as well to warn by standers (only applies if they are on one side of the machine!!) when the quick hitch is open.. I can only presume your meant to leg it if you see a red beacon??

yes, seen that happen a few times, but never seen them questioned when they get out of the cab and the green beacon is still flashing

Had the seat belt thing drilled into me a long long long time ago before it became the in thing so it really is just second nature if I jump on anything....as for the functionality of them working, that is a good point...some of the lads found this was a problem, so what they did was, once they were able to get enough of the seat belt out.......they’d tie a knot in it so it couldn’t retract and go back in.....it doesn’t matter what gets put in place, people just seem to try and find an easier way to get round it.....but I think it all comes down to the site induction, if they took more of a stance to the lads on the ground and off loaded the ones who walked up the blind side of a machine or walked within it turning circle, it would help prevent a lot of near misses/fatality’s, but all they seem to do is want to put everything onto the driver.
