opens the boot, takes out a hand brush, brushes all the bits of crap, that was a trabby moments before, off his HUGE bumper, drops the brush back in the boot .... gets in and drives off :LOL:..... My accountant's wife who is a university lecturer uses a Tesla. She drove 50,000 + kilometres in it over the last year! Service costs are a pittance, no major oil changes etc and the saving in fuel costs was enormous. In Australia major coal burning power companies are flagging plant shut downs and replacing them mainly with solar which is now cheaper than coal with prices still dropping! Battery storage has also started on a large scale with a massive 100 megawatt Tesla battery being built in 60 days days from contract signing. As soon as it was commissioned it saved the National grid from outages by buffering power loss caused by a breakdown in an interstate generator. The beauty of a big battery is that it can be turned on in milliseconds, no wait for a power station generator to fire up the boiler and get running.

I'm running my simple reliable diesel gear, (no common rail injection and a bit of biofuel), until something affordable and electric comes along. Got my own solar system and room for more :) The speed of technology that renewables are based on is moving according to Moore's Law or faster :eek:

BUT Dave ... you have summat we don't see very often ... bright sunshine :giggle: ..... battery tech is the key to progression of leccymobiles .... when it's really sorted, then it'll take off ... big time. People are still wary of range...cure that issue and they won't give a toss about how big the leccymobile's carbon trotter print is ... no road tax, cheap servicing, get in and press the loud pedal :giggle: .. no faffing. I'd have one if it'd tow a couple of tonnes and do 1000 miles on a charge
anyone know what it costs to charge a leccymobile to do 500 miles?

I’ve got a few customers with Teslas - apparently a full charge is around £10 and will do upto 300 miles. Using the heater reduces range though...

One of my customers regularly commutes to London (over 300 mile round trip) and they don’t drive slowly IME... They stop for a coffee in services near Oxford on one of the legs for a 20 min quick charge and never have any issues.
The tech and infrastructure are coming along quickly - I think Tesla have pretty much nailed it if you can afford one (and don’t need to tow/carry goods etc).

No matter what I seem to find that takes my eye ... it's in or around bloody Norwich :mad: .... I've bought two bikes and a digger from there so far :unsure: ... an' it's a ****ing looooong way to go look at / collect from, from here ..... 500 mile round trip .... three good purchases though :giggle::giggle:(y)

Currently you can buy an electric vehicle for the trips it suits which are 90% of an average persons need. The next lot of electric vehicles will cover greater range, more versatility such as pickups and trucks. The supply of batteries is holding things back as there is such a massive demand. Solar panels have dropped by 90% in cost over the past 15 years or so as factory production has grown, so will battery costs, when supply begins to match or exceed demand.
Needless to say China along with many other countries are feverishly building massive battery factories to supply not only cars but heavy equipment, national grids, houses and appliances.

I remember when my old man got a rechargeable Skil Sher drill back in the late 1970's. It worked, slowly for a few holes and then the nicad battery needed a long charge. Bit of a novelty, didn't get used much at all. Nowadays try and take a tradies rechargeable power tools away and have them use corded tools and you'd have a riot on your hands. As soon as the electric gear starts building momentum things will change very fast. Remember pretty well all the essential tech for electric powered anything is well sorted and relatively inexpensive to compete for current requirements. It's just the battery equation that needs to get sorted. That's now happening so it's only a matter of time. In just a few years this conversation will seem dated.

And Druid, you may not have as much sun, hardly any it seems, but you have the wind and that works fine for power generation day or night. Perhaps a small wind turbine on the Druid Ranch could be in the wings? Would require a bit of heavy machinery and metal fabrication skills? Know who could do that? ;)

Don't complain - suggest what's better
If they bring out a decent pickup I'll certainly be interested. A lot less to go wrong with an electric motor. Just need to get myself a decent extension lead to get from the hotel room to the car park!

the worm has turned. We will all be electric in the not too distant future.

If there was internet in bygone days the Steam engine boys would be saying the same about diesel.

Once industry gears up to spit out electric vehicles it will be dirt cheap.

Think about it, every garage has to have costly deliveries, maintain premesis etc. all replaced by a charging point at home.

Lithium is hard to come by so can't see prices dropping on batteries as aus Dave says only certain places with under ground salt brine lakes that contain it

Electric will not be widespread while there’s still oil in the ground and money to be made from it. The oil companies are too rich to let it happen and have too much to loose.

The electric we have is just a token gesture to look like there are efforts and changes being made. It’s all smoke and mirrors.
Not to mention the environmental impact of actually producing these vehicles. Admittedly there are obviously zero emissions from there operation, but what’s coming out the back of a modern petrol vehicle these days? Next to f**k all if you look at the emissions tester during an MOT.

There is a reason the Japanese only keep vehicles till 60000 miles or 3 years cost to much to put it through their version of an MOT due to emissions from a used car compared to a new one

Yes I know their MOT is strict, but most modern vehicles will not have the emissions worries of older models. Decent engine management systems and components are very reliable now, and no reason a vehicle won’t run as cleanly at ten years old, as it did when new.
