Youve really got to love it as it will take over your life.

My girlfriend left me recently we had been together for 5 years and she had always jokingly said its, me you and the business.
That's gutting tbh, sorry to hear Danny.

As I've said to a few people before I've not had a proper relationship since I was 19, Mostly due to the fact work comes first and I can't be f***ed dealing with needy people that want the rewards without giving up the time :cautious: keep being told the right one will come along but I doubt it.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
Something you have to be able to do to get beyond a certain size is delegation. Tried it once and didn’t like it!!
absolutely ....... but you know the old sayings "if you want a job doing well ........" &" no one does it like you would yourself"
finding folks dedicated enough to delegate that level of responsibility to is very hard AND COSTLY ..... they have to bring in significantly more than they cost and be absolutely trustworthy ... most folk of that ilk are already working for themselves

spent well over ten years single, 'fore Pam came along (and that's a story in itself) ... like Rory .... CNBA ... but it made a huge difference to the degree of effort and time i was able to devote to growing my biz .... self employment is seriously hard if you REALLY want to be successful ... end of .... let no one tell you otherwise.

Feel for you Danny ... it's a real bitter pill, especially if it's out of the blue

I’ve had on and off relationships some last 5 years some less but works always been problem in that if they work for someone and have paid holidays etc they get funny with you doing weekends or not having time off. I’ve got a lot better in planning work around stuff, so I can have 3 weeks off in summer etc but the times I’ve been single between relationships just crack on and do the 100 hour weeks.

trying to balance it more now, have a good old boy machine op and youngish skilled labourer who’s keen to learn. I set them going then can go do stuff or rock up a bit later to have breakfast with family but it’s always me in the dark finishing concrete etc.

2 years into current relationship and going well just bought a house that needs a year of work so gotta now find 1 year to do that and keep existing clients happy and some money ticking over Etc

also been a single dad since my lad was 14 months old he’s 12 now have him 50/50 with his mum so that forced me not to do too many stupid hours haha

my dads 74 and never worked for anyone else got 3 developments in design and planning and no need to work but the work defines him I guess or no hobbies to keep him busy

Interesting thread ..... its definitely tough to run your own show and it asks questions of you literally all the time.
What I was thinking when I moved to a country that speaks a different language, is notoriously riddled with beurocracy and high taxation to start my own business god knows 🤨
Luckily have been supported tirelessly by my long suffering partner of 32 years (she was 17) how the feck she puts up with me i dont know.
Although it seems she is starting to get pissed with me saying we havent got the budget to replace the ancient wreck of a car and then buying more plant 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Ever since me old fella started for himself he wanted somewhere with a bit of land with it or an old farm. He managed to do it back in 2000 so I'm lucky to have enough space at home to have a yard and there's a fair chunk of garden as well.

You one of these have it easy second generation lads Rory mentioned somewhere ;)
Lost old lad to cancer 10 year ago at which point i packed in plumbing and took his business on. Under different circumstances I'd probably have started on my own plumbing and probably should have done that prior to then. If I had done that i wouldn't have took the plant on. Glad i did though it's not as profitable as plumbing by a long shot for the effort required but living in one of the most stunning areas of the country and being out seeing it every day ain't so bad. The ready made business was too good an opportunity to pass up even if I'd only tried it for a year or so but it aint lost in me the effort it took for me old lad to get it going. It aint no multi million business i can keep selling bits off as i waste it either 😆

When me old lad started for himself in 88 he wanted to start off with a new machine (3cx thats where everyone started back then) cos he didn't wanna be fixing it every night. He saved what he could prior and had to borrow off his in laws (which he hated) and finance the rest. The hours he worked when i was growing up were something else. If i wanted to see him for any length of time you basically had to go to work with him. That first 3cx was changed for another new one at 3 year old with 14500 hrs on it and the second clocked up 16500 in the following 4 years. He genuinely loved work and what he did and i honestly think a lot of the hours put in during the early years went without enough reward but with a mortgage wife and 2 kids it's what he needed to do. Knowing what went into it was a big reason i couldn't just sell all the machinery and let that business disappear.

And most importantly, property that was cheap enough for one honest bloke to afford with honest graft. Those were the days!

Got lucky timing wise with where we are now. The property boom that followed probably trebled it's value over the 5 years after he bought it.
