I’ve got an Mreg benford 3000 dumper as far as I can see it’s air cooled as got fins on the engine is there anything else that keeps it cool as it seems to be getting hot now

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
some better pix would help, but get a good air line in there and blow everything out to start with and an idea of what engine it is ?

Air cooled engines rely on two things to stay cool - air flow and oil.
The oil carries the heat from the inside of the engine to the outer casing (plus an oil cooler if it has one).
Airflow around the crank case and past the cooling fins does the rest.
So keep the oil topped up and everything else clean

One side of the engine is partially covered so doesn’t that stop air flow

depends on whether it has forced cooling (with a fan usually) - it desperately wants a good clean and all the crud which will have accumulated on all the oil spillages blasting out of the cooling finning.

That'll be to guide the air around the cooling fins
A quick search found a tech-spec site saying it should have a Deutz
The manual for the Benford 3000 shows a fan (but I'm not convinced it's your engine)

Ahhh - I think we have a winner.
The fan is part of the flywheel which is why it seems to be missing.
A good steam cleaning would improve the cooling (and make it less unpleasant to work on)
