Just to complete the thread. I ended up getting the pollor auger. It looked a copy of the hyundai to me. Paid 120 inc vat so a ton by the time that comes back. I may sell it soon after this job and 1 or 2 others in the pipeline after my recent experience with fuel gumming up. It could be ages till I need one again and I can prob get a ton for it when im done. I found we had to lift the turf with the shovel first then it worked a lot easier. Gave it a test in my garden the other week and was great. Did all the holes fine for us today. A 300mm auger would be great as @V8Druid has but then again this machine might struggle. It wasn't too much effort to trim the hole out after. Theres deffo a knack to using them dont let it go crazy digging itself in hold it up a touch so it keeps spinning. Probably telling you all how to suck eggs! Anyway just wanted to close the thread off

Too right. Not sure how i ever managed the old fashioned way. Saying that we are blessed with pretty boring clay round my way. It did seem to cut thru roots when we were near the tree too

I've got the hyundai auger, was great and I've done a lot of holes in surprisingly hard ground with it, but last time I tried to use it the fuel primer bulb was split. Should get it out and look at repairing it.
More than paid for itself though, did 120 holes on 1 decking job alone

Used the 1 on the machine last week for 1st time in a couple of years. Way easier than digging by hand

Just to say I finished this fence off today as we finished a job early in the morning. Had to put the last hole halfway into the hedge. Thought I might be in some trouble with all the roots but blasted through no problem. Did occasionally snag but just lifted out and went back thru. Would of help if I drilled an inch further to the left but it was friday afternoon in the baking sun and by the time I sussed it the post wasn't coming out for me to widen the hole. The hedge will have enveloped it in 6 months. Anyway was thoroughly impressed again, 120 well spent. I let it run itself out of fuel today as could be awhile till I use it again. 2 of the guys from the next door job came to have a look they were a bit amazed like they'd never seen one before. Were even more impressed when I told them how cheap they are.
