How well do these hand held petrol augers work with 200mm bit? Is it a waste of time or do they actually do the job? Obviously a machine mounted one would always be better but just after people's experiences with these

very happy with the Lumag one I bought last year/year before?
does 8" sweet as - 4" in an instant- not tried the 6" and also have a 12" for it, from somewhere - not tried that yet :giggle:
went for the Lumag as it has a horizontally mounted crank shaft and 90 deg. gear box (y)

Ok with the 200mm flight for some concrete fence post holes then? They are pretty cheap nowadays aren't they the hyundai ones are 150 ex vat. Be cheaper than hire to buy for one fence and sell on. Can't see me using it for owt else

didn't go with the Hyundai 'cos the crank is vertical and not a fan - very happy with what I did choose though and starts first pull every time - think it was under 200 quid IIRC

Cheers I found for 250 on ebay.

Whats the benefit of the crank orientation? The lumag has 12 month vs 3yr warranty for hyundai so they must be confident? i did find one looks like a copy hyundai cheaper they prob come out same factories

I've got the DeWalt paddle mixer...making me think. 🤔M14 augers anyone?

They work great in sand and clay, any rocks and it’s a no go.

The cheap petrol ones are very vibey. But cheap.

I made an adaptor to run the augers with my m18 right angle drill. Works well.

better crank lube, less 'lop sided' piston/bore wear and the Lumag has a substantial worm drive reduction .. have to say all the Hyundai stuff I've bought has been faultless too

So not worth a smaller auger on say a cordless paddle mixer or SDS drill.

I ask as I have fencing at home to do as was thinking could auger to loosen to the dig out with a post shovel. But maybe a few roots from old conifers and will be into the clay after 400mm

Sds drill will burn the clutch out in no time. Why everyone tries to use them for core drills is beyond me.

At 180 inc vat they're not dear anyway. There's a guy near me with one on ebay after 1 use. Asking 160 for it. I offered him a ton but he didn't bite. Literally dearer than I'd pay new after getting vat back.

Proper pet peeve of mine that .
After buying a proper core drill years ago the difference is night and day. Not even mega money the old style Makita one. Till some twats nicked it and the core set. 🤬

What ground were you working in. Last fence i did dug the holes by hand so owt got to be better than that

Just to complete the thread. I ended up getting the pollor auger. It looked a copy of the hyundai to me. Paid 120 inc vat so a ton by the time that comes back. I may sell it soon after this job and 1 or 2 others in the pipeline after my recent experience with fuel gumming up. It could be ages till I need one again and I can prob get a ton for it when im done. I found we had to lift the turf with the shovel first then it worked a lot easier. Gave it a test in my garden the other week and was great. Did all the holes fine for us today. A 300mm auger would be great as @V8Druid has but then again this machine might struggle. It wasn't too much effort to trim the hole out after. Theres deffo a knack to using them dont let it go crazy digging itself in hold it up a touch so it keeps spinning. Probably telling you all how to suck eggs! Anyway just wanted to close the thread off
