Generators and the Russians

After getting caught with a 3 day power cut in 2024.. plus the ever growing risk of the russians turning off the power..I’ve decided to be sensible and sort some back up supply/changeover switches out.
For home I only need enough for fridge and freezer, boiler, LED lights and internet. Think 1000w enough. I’m in small culdesac so want to keep it as quiet as possible to avoid noise pollution, and so small that there is no capacity for neighbours to want to plug in!
Thinking Honda EU10i …. But would be interested in anyone’s experience with the Chinese copy.

For work HQ it’s a bit more complicated as higher draw, and currently on 2 x meters, but I think the supplies could be combined, will chat with electrician.

Probably looking at something like a chinese Hyundai .. Deisel and big enough to also use on the odd site job and to run a small stick welder. Thoughts on these?

Can't say much about generators but we have dealt with these guys and they where really good, and really helpful. We bought a 65kva Perkins unit from them. Was off the shelf and quick delivery and they are really helpful over the phone. And they palletised it sent it out to us and added extra sockets for us.

What happens when the Russians turn the diesel off?😂

What happens when either kill your generator via microchip
EMP you mean? I will have bigger problems that a generator wont solve in that case. Maybe I should get a PTO one instead.. No Microchips on Dexta.

I am not Doomsday prepping, but last time we had a 3 day power cut it was very disruptive but luckily mostly over the weekend, and not widespread so most staff could still WFH.

EMP will affect anything with a unbroken circuit long enough to induce a current.

But I'm more concerned about hidden software kill switches.... And yes they almost certainly exist.

I don't think there would be much chance of permanently disabling a sub 10kva generator remotely. There is so little to them. And if it's really tin foil hat time, stick it in a shipping container and it won't get the signal.

I have a customer running “off grid” with one of those Hyundai diesel generators. Certainly not quiet but does the job I guess. I could do with a small diesel gen to power my unit, looked at a few stephill one but never got round to actually buying something.

I missed a Stephill with very low hours and Auto start that was up for sale locally - which has got me started thinking.

I've my thoughts. Perhaps easy to get them running for you and I but the most average person.... Not so much

I think that's probably quite a moot point as I would guess there is a very strong correlation between the type of people that could get it running and the type of people that would happen to have a small diesel generator sitting around incase of nuclear apocalypse.

Wouldn’t buy a Chinese copy of anything if you actually want it to work in a time of need!
That’s my thought. Little 1kva Honda can sit in shed with a tank of Aspen 4 fuel to stop it going off. 8kva Hyundai on wheels small enough to get in the van but big enough to run work HQ if needed. Probably ought to leave HVO in that , but derv seems to keep pretty well these days.

There is nothing inside a basic diesel or petrol generator to remotely disable it. Nothing.
Fully agreed.

I've a suitcase 3kv Hyundai at home which Is incredibly handy and simple. Once I'd swapped all the crappy lines out for Decent etc stuff and binned the battery 🤣🤣
That and a DJI 1000 power bank means I'm good indefinitely..always have 20L of E5 as well.
Always keep 20 L of drinking water. Plus we've got one of them mini filtration bags.
Always have plenty of gas on hand. I'm not a prepper but it's common sense if you live in the sticks I reckon.

A 48-hour power outage is a good way of testing your metal. It's surprising how many things rely on 240.
Communications is quite a big one, so starlink is a good help. Most mobile networks are only good for 24 to 48 hours. Max

As they say - no point worrying about Doomsday, worry about Next Tuesday!
