I used to think "petrol" was a tightly controlled fraction (or 'slice') of crude oil - it's not.
It's a blend of assorted hydrocarbons selected and balanced for various characteristics that include burn rate and emissions as the most obvious. The "petrol" sold here in south east asia smells highly of toluene (a common paint thinner). For modern engines with both knock sensors and O
2 sensors, the ECU is constantly re-tuning the engine to make the best of the fuel and should cope fine with a fairly wide range of blends. Much more so than fixed tune carby engines (remember those!).
I can imagine what it did to rubber lines though
In a previous life I was involved in compliance testing of a new (rubber) fuel line that involved things like:
heating test fuel to 80C and running it through the lines for weeks. Another was to immerse a section of line (ends unprotected so all layers exposed) in a blend of solvents more aggressive than would be expected in service. At the end of the tests, the lines were chopped up and closely inspected for any degradation. Any flaw would have resulted in the product line being rejected.
Having seen older fuel lines going hard and brittle (or swelling), modern lines can cope with anything you'd be prepared to put through them!
