Fitting a battery isolator.

Over the years i have fitted a few battery isolators without any problem, But I am just about to fit another as someone removed the original isolator and the new one when bolted in place is a little tight in the battery box. If i fit it in place it looks like one of the negative terminals may be touching the metal of the battery box. I know it's the negative but should it cause any problem.

can you not shorten the post down to the bare minimum to get a connection/full nut?

Yes there is a little that can be cut off i did consider doing that, I will have a go tomorrow there is a bracket in the battery box which i could bend and attach it to which would possibly do the job.

If the terminal that is actually touches is the one to the battery surely that will act as a weak earth?

You hit the nail on the head ! I did not want that happening, I am going to bend the bracket out to create a bit more clearance, If that does not give a decent clearance i will relocate it completely.

no .... if the isolator is off and the touching pole is battery side it's still disconnected ... if the other pole (machine side) is touching then yes

Exactly, or just drill to holes to line up with the battery isolator in the battery box and bolt the leads to them, ha ha

Did'nt get a chance to sort it today as i was doing a split CV boot on a Ferrari 348 and it should have been an easy job but instead it was a PITA so still have it in pieces now need to order some additional parts grrrr!

Honest guv, I had a week of the Fcar experience, last weekend it had no cooling fans so changed the various sensors then bridged the fan motor to make sure that worked which it did then noticed a leak from the R/H radiator so removed that and took it to the local radiator repair chap who found the problem and repaired it then pressure tested it and charged me £50 which was a bargain, As i refitted it all I was giving the suspension a polish as you do! And noticed grease from a split cv boot which takes me to today the joys of classic car ownership (still wouldn't change it for anything else) certainly can never see me getting stuck into an electric car. But at least the radiator isnt leaking anymore and the fans are cutting in correctly again!
