Expanding undercarriage not retracting

Well one side is fine, but the other side won’t budge. Likely cause anyone? Such things are new to me, so thought I’d ask before the spanners come out. Do they just seize up with corrosion, or might it be something more complicated?

Have a look around and see if any rocks or if it has any extra aligning rods blocking it

Lift the side thats stuck and have a loot round it. Is the machine try to move it. Hever had any problems with mine

better still... pick it all up on the blade and boom to relieve any stress in the undercarriage frame .... and look for any cracks ..... probably just tish Chris, but if anything more, taking the weight completely off the frame is bound to help matters ... maybe a bloody good steam/pressure wash off'd help matters too

I always extend and retract with my micri in the air

Hmm, I did have the machine airborne before attempting to retract. I’ll have to have a closer inspection.

What machine is it?

There normally full of mud and rocks stopping them going in get it in the air and have a good clean out. I have seen one with a lip worn on the top of the slides where the frame rubbed but it would go in if lifted up.

It’s a Volvo EC18D

Well it was just a bit seized. Machine has less than 1000hrs on the clock, and hasn’t been used for months, so still fairly tight I suppose.

I had to pick one up last winter and it wouldn't fit on the trailer with tracks out which had frozen had to take the gun off a steam cleaner and leave it trickling over the undercarriage for an hour

Give a decent coating of grease to the runners and extend and retract them a few times

Im a bit hesitant about grease, as it’s likely to turn into grinding paste, but I’ll see what the operators manual has to say. Perhaps silicone grease might be better??

Waxoyl is a good option

Yes, I was thinking it could be. I think the 3cx manual recommends it for the extending dipper.

Yep waxoly for all things expanding/telescopic . It’s much nicer stuff to use when it’s been left out in the air for afew weeks to go hard, it doesn’t just rub straight off then
