Elliot and Lake 35 ton jack

Has anybody any experience of Dismantling and/or repairing the above? As part of my Bristol Europa retrieve/repair/renovate project (going VERY slowly), I am trying to set up a reasonable array of tools, etc with which to attack the beast. I recently acquired 2 Elliot and Lake 35-ton jacks at auction (Way over the top, but ridiculously cheap). One of them works a treat, but the other has problems holding a load, i.e. it will list without a load, but as soon as a load is applied, it lifts no further - possible a seal, valve or pump issue. So I am, mainly out of interest, looking to see if I can fix it. So far I have removed the capping nut at the top, and the "up/down" valve on the side, but I cannot see my way forward from this point.

I know it is a bit of a flight of fancy and i can get a perfectly adequate new bottle jack for a relatively small cost (probably less than I could wind up spending on this) but someone out there might have a smidgen of knowledge that could turn a lump of cast iron into a useful lifter.

Can you swap parts between the good and faulty jacks to narrow the issue to a particular component?

Isn't that the type of Jack that once you've taken the big nut off the top you tap around the base with a soft faced hammer and release the outer to reveal the glory inside ?

Probably a good idea to drain the oil first or be ready for it .
Don't know if anyone makes bottle Jack's that good any more, modern one will be easier to tick the boxes but won't be as solid or safe (IMHO)

If i knew how to dismantle either (or both) That is an approach I would be keen to take. But without that knowledge/skill, That is not possible.

Is the intention of the tapping of the base to unscrew the base from the casting above, or merely to release it? And, am I right in assuming that the "outer" to which you refer, is that upper casting ?

Are you sure there's oil in it it sounds like your pumping air to me will it push down by standing on it?

And have you checked that the release valve is tight/sealing properly

I had to buy some big jacks during first lockdown got bored so decided to pile my garage as it had sunk more at the back than the front so I pushed blocks down to find the hard so when i wanted to lift garage up at the rear I bought some chinnise jacks 1 32 ton and 2 16tons plus others i allready had. I put over 70 tons of jacks under to lift rear in air 1 of the china 16 ton jack started leaking so that was just left under and concreated in ,the 32 ton jack I now cant unscrews jack adjuster think I put too much wieght on it but I had an old 8 ton lorry jack that I pushed blocks down with ,made in england still goes perfect after all the wieght I put on it

The tapping is just to release the body of the jack from the base, likely to be stuck on by the gasket. Most of what you see of the jack lifts off and you are left with a relatively thin base plate with the hydraulic cylinder sticking up with the threads at the top that the big nut came off
