Early 2000 sprinter Vs iveco?

I'm tempted to get a van. It would be a panel Van and a mwb around 5m long and 3.5 tone.
I would be using it for towing.
Is one better than the other?
I know the iveco has problematic rear brakes.
The years I'm looking at are up to about 2004 .

Any particular reason you’re looking at that age? Rust will be biggest issue I would have thought.

2004..... Both Sprinter and Iveco are pretty mechanically awesome trucks. Both suffer from rust.

Merc's rust around the Door Cills first. Ivecos rust under the bonnet around the battery compartment/top of suspension. and Chassis crossmembers.

Both are a good bet if you can find a rust free clean one!

Not many sprinters tow 3500kg, it is a factory only option. My understanding is all Iveco vans legally tow 3500kg.

As above. I was looking recently and couldn’t find one with a 3.5t tow pack.

Price, cheap as pos without looking revolting.
If I cant find a 4x4 worth having I would like a van.

Ive got and had both.

The sprinter will only tow 2000kgs and most iveco vans are rated at 2800kgs for towing, there are models that will tow upto 3500kgs but harder to find.

With the mercs of that age it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anyone with diagnostic kit for them although it's probably the same for most vehicles that age

They are prity basic. Its a 14pin adaptor onto a standard obd2 code reader for the merc.

The obd connector is the same but the connections behind are different or something like that. It was standardised in 2004 for diesel cars but no idea about vans.

They are capable of more but they were from an era where things werent as heavy. If you do get a sprinter make sure you get one with traction control as it makes a huge difference if you do tow with it or pull out abit too quick. I think it became standard around 2004 but was an extra before then.
