Hi all

Currently I have a shared driveway me and another detached house share a tarmac drive, it runs the front of my house and our double garage and driveway is to the left. The neighbours straight on

We have a 6x6 ish patch of grass I want to turn into a third parking area

I was going to bring a micro digger home and scratch about myself in this small area and get a grab to remove my waste

The question is, services. I need to go down what 10 inches ? Will anything be aparent at that height I have blades buckets but that doesn’t really stop me
Making a mess

Should I get a cat and genny? Am I over thinking it

Ross short answer always expect the unexpected haha services are MEANT to be in at certain depths but who really knows if it where me id scan the whole thing just to be sure.. better 15 mins scanning that a nice big bill from one of the nice utility companys

surely if the utility is not at prescribed depth it's their problem though Jordy ?? .... I had a telcom cable barely 4-6" below surface a few years ago ... and they were straight out when I told 'em it was only 6" deep ....
I'd already had them out the week before to tell me where their bloody cables were ..... "definitely no cables anywhere near there sir "

it will only pick up electric anyway, the runs normally go in a straight line from the meter box to the connection in the road. Water 700mm depth gas 400 or so, electric same. Thats IF the builder did it to regs.

Check sewer though as come of them can be pretty close to the surface sometimes. Again they will go in a straightline, lift the closest manhole lid to you and see which way they point at your house.

You will more than likely be fine just scrape a bit at a time

Not sure where your based but if your close to worcestershire I have a genny and detector you can borrow.

I dont know about over with you guys but in NI anything is possible we regularly go to change boundary boxes for water and not uncommon to cut through bt with the concrete saw or have both electric and bt wrapped round old type stop cock chambers.. and most utilities are only approximate locations haha.. i now with water you can request a locate where a technician comes out amd more or less says our service pipe is roughly there.. and in my experience bt and NIE are the same over here.. have seen new builds with the water service barely 6 inchs deep..

And just saying to fred our CAT does radio and electric and genny 3 different settings radio will pick up bt no problem and even pick up copper and lead service pipes and even cast iron main

yes any metal of course it will pick up. gas and water though mdpe.

For tarmac you want around 225mm which will give you 150mm type 1 and 75mm for the tarmac
Block paving you want around 230mm same amount of stone and 80mm for the block and sand
If you want to gravel it do 180mm that will give you 150mm stone and 30mm for your stone - gravel can be a night are with dragging out across drive you can get them egg crate things but they are expensive and you'll still get a bit of stone coming out
Wouldn't worry about planning permission as driveways rarely get checked for compliance.
If it's 6m X 6m at 225mm dig out it's 8m³ so just over a grab wagon but depending on driver they may squeeze it in, if you have a little dumper it will save you the hassle of haymaking it or barrowing it options are either dig it all up and stack it where it's dug out (time consuming) or if you get 10 sheets of 9mm OSB you could cover a part of your drive and bulk it on there
At 150mm type 1 stone your looking at just under 13t of stone.
At upto 240mm depth your shouldn't hit any services although if you have virgin and it's through the grass it's probably just under the turf.
In theory all services run perpendicular to the property or service boxes.
You could probably use the grading bucket to dig it so little chance of damaging anything if you do come across something.

Generally don't get a bill if it's your own property.
Done a footing for a guy who literally cut into his electric cable with a handsaw some bright spark had put it in a 110mm pipe

Watch out for NTL/ Virgin Media, whatever its called these days. Those bastards just put the cable under the turf - literally. Otherwise you should be fine, just go careful, you shouldn't need to go deep enough to hit anything in theory but you never know.
