Diesel and drill pumps- better alternative?

For the minis I'm getting a bit fed up of filling up cans of red and rattling around with them in the back of the Disco stinking the place out- so rather than cans or mini fuel tank latest idea is to just run them on white and suck the diesel out of the disco and into the digger. Doubt I use more than 50L a week on average so not really a problem. But I need a good pump- think the drill pumps can struggle a bit with a height difference sucking from low to high- is there a better method or pump for this?

Maybe a way you could use the fuel pump that’s fitted to the disco and put a valve in and tee off the fuel line . Just turn your valve and switch your ignition on and away you go !

That's a good idea to use the fuel pump on disco but don't think they actually create much volume out through the hose- so could be a slow business filling a digger. Will look at the 12v- one of the ciggie lighter would be ok but the ones that have battery clips would be a bit of pain on a daily basis.

Just change the end to fag lighter socket . I used mine to pump out a half filled with water treatment plant once to get me out of a hole , it was bloody brilliant for such a wee thing .

I think I'd be more inclined to just go for something like this. Or on the side like a new defender poser wagon
I actually only use 4 of the 5 litre metal cans for the diggers/mini loader as they never need more than 15 litres a day, normally nearer to 5. The little cans are much nicer to use.

I wasn't even aware of anti syphon! But from a quick search it looks as though it can't be syphoned on a D2. So that's this thread firmly archived!

I’ve had annoyance this week filling up with white using jerky cans, spills etc to the extent of looking for something to sit 5 cans in, my 200 litre tank is a bit big to anyways have with snd finding forecourt garages annoying with filling cans or fuel cubes etc. This week bern told can only have 1 Jerry can and another garage that I couldn’t fill my 200litre tank as it wasn’t approved container despite being bunded and labelled up etc much better than a Jerry can.

Little sumbserible pump and the LDV/tipper ranger fuel tank works well for me. Other vehicles are anti-siphon but i can decant from those two OK.

I find 4x5l engine oil cans to be a good shape to pour from and convenient when working in woods etc.

fuel pump will only run for a limited time if motor not running, from memory ... pressurises fuel system and shuts down

but if tee-ed off to an open line it may well continue to run, thinking about it, as there will be no back pressure build up - could well work OK ... those pumps'll shift a fair bit of fuel too -- I use a an EFi Bosch one occasionally for transfers

They spew it out at a fair rate as I found out to my cost when a line failed on my 1st d2...

yeh the in line Bosch EFi lifts fair push it out ... not sure of their rating, but'll do 100 litres in a few minutes, so probably 20-30L / minute on a 1/2" bore line and'll pick it up from the bottom of a 205 barrel too

not cheap to buy, but just about every old EFi Ford had one bolted underneath and I dare say a lot of others too

Can't you stick a pump in the tank and then t off at the filler neck and bring the bigger hose up from there?
If it has a anti syphon on the tank spigot ( I forget from when I removed mine) just disable/ remove it.
Good thing about the disco is it has 100l tank.

without taking the tank out to remove the substantial perforated mesh screen, there's no way into the tank from the filler neck

I once got told I couldn’t fill 3 Jerry cans up with petrol (was off racing!) but only told me once in the shop to pay I said well it’s in the cans now so either take my money or don’t but I’m not emptying em!

Could you have a bulk tank at the yard and fill 5 cans before you head off to the job? You could have a frame with a bar that passes through the handles to keep secure in position.

I don't remember anything like that on the disco tank and i think I emptied it out. I think it was just a flap.
But then that could have been the range rover.

From researching it there seems to be different anti syphon valves. One is like a ball valve, Let's diesel though but not a hose the other is like a flap, let's both through but good luck getting the hose out again!

I think the anti siphon valve is also meant to close off when the vehicle turns over to prevent fuel running out. The electric pump also usually stops shortly after the crank sensor stops so that it doesn’t keep pumping after an accident.

Considered. But they're massive. Barely got enough room to get a few 20L cans on as it is with all the other cramping there.
Even the smaller 100l ones are pretty big.
