Has anyone used or know anything about diagnostic tools? Looking for one to put discovery into service mode to release rear callipers ?

Fleebay has some for £130 ish for exact manufacture , But wondering if it’s worth spending extra so it would work on other manufacturers vehicles as well ?

I'd start with one of the cheap fleabay ODB-2 (wifi or bluetooth) adapters and several of the free/ trial apps (elm327, Piston, Torque etc.) - working through them to see if the free version will work or if an upgrade will work.

I got the Launch small android one for £150 iirc on Amazon.
It's done pretty much every vehicle I've tried it on.
Ranging from brand new amarok which surprised me to old astras etc. actually got recommended it from a mechanic at recovery place...he said it's cheap but does most stuff.

Landrover discovery , needs to be put in service mode to allow rear callipers to be wound in electrically, then re set when you pads put in

Any of the sub £20 Bluetooth obd readers on Amazon. Then download torque pro. It is free for the basic stuff then around 6-8 quid per vehicle model to get the more comprehensive stuff. If you only want to use it on one or two vehicles it works out a very economical way of doing it.

Can't you just disconnect the motor from the body and do it manually? Only looks to be 2 screws holding the motor on?
I've never had any experience of them, so it is just a random thought from what I've seen they look like

I did ask someone about doing it this way but they said to be cautious winding it in manually as it has electric motor and i think he said car needs to re-set it’s self, But i would think these epb system’s would work on pressure to compensate for pad wear?

If you unbolted the motor off the caliper then you eliminate damaging it, I'd of thought and once back together I dare say a few on and off with the park brake switch in the cab would take up the slack.

Yeh that’s what I would think , Leave car in neutral with park brake off then disconnect? Do you have diagrams for this MY21 ? I’ve not had wheel of yet. Thanks

I’m pretty sure my father in law did his without any computer, he YouTube’s anything he doesn’t know and always gets along just fine… goes mega fast everywhere now that his brakes aren’t doing much anymore

I’ve seen something about the new defender after a certain year you can’t replace the front pads without diagnostic kit that will put it into “service mode”. If you try the normal way by pushing pistons back it thinks there’s a fault with the abs pump when you pump the pedal!

IID tool is a good bit of kit for a D4, not sure what other landrovers it covers.

Changed the front discs & pads today, Thankfully no fault codes appeared . They’re closing all the diy routes, Very soon all work will need done by the stealers!

was discussing the procedure over a beer (so wasn't paying a lot of attention to which car), but the procedure for "that" car was to disconnect the motor cable and apply 12V with reverse polarity to wind it back.
As said, not sure what this applied to, so I woun't do it without checking first, but certainly easy if it works.

That would make sense, How would i rig up a cable to do this off a 12v dewalt battery?

Only other concern is would car need to know if the calliper has been wound back in or as said above does it just work of a pressure sensor?

I think a Sunday sesh would be good idea

I'd have a hunt to see if anyone else does it that way (could be expensive if it doesn't like it).
Based on no experience at all, I'd think the BCU would measure the current and cut power when the motor stalls.
