Completely standard ones that I have driven for work always seemed alright tbh.
Infact it could almost be said that they didn't deserve the unreliable reputation
I have a 2014 defender that was bought new, and has now done approx 75k. It was my work truck for the first couple of years, regularly towing and off road quite a bit.
Genuinely, it has been the single most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. It had a turbo hose blow whilst under warranty (which was fine by me, as they recovered it and loaned us a brand new Range Rover Sport until it was returned 🤣), and other than routine servicing has not needed anything else (not even a bulb or battery).
That’s a lot more than can be said for my 2022 Toyota Hilux…..

would you not rather a 200/300 tdi?

Td5 has a lot of electrics and no torque low down. I didnt like driving my old manual d2.
I think on balance I'd take a TD5 over a 300. I've had both and both engines have been really reliable. Think td5 needs a remap to get the best out of them but they sound much nicer than a 300! A TD5 is still pretty straightforward compared to today's offerings and not much a decent indy Landy place can't sort out on them.

I'm finally getting to do some work on my disco. I need and try and find where all the slop is on the transmission.
Has anyone rebuilt a lt230?
I think a lot of the prices on defenders are nonsense. I was looking at a 130 on market place a while back and was tempted but £12000 seamed a bit too much. Ive just looked and it went for £6000.

Slop in the transmission is very likely to be in the dry splines between the main box and the transfer box, in time it'll stop driving completely 😑

Ive got a lt230 with a diff lock so ill have a look when i put that on. I thought the hi low selector ring could wear.
There are no drive flanges on the disco2 . The front half shafts go in to the cv's and the rear i think have a flange that is part of the half shaft.

Owned a 300tdi Disco for 7odd Years . Also spent a bit of time driving TD5 110s and V8 (LPG) 110s. Dad had the late (Puma 2.2 transit engine?) 90 defender for years which was better in every practical way than the TD5… but lacked something?
If I had the chance to buy a defender (which is a 40 year old itch that is still waiting to be scratched) I think TD5 would be my choice .
