I remember a thread back on the old forum that caused a lot of controversy. Let's get it going on here

On the old thread, Rory was charging £20 a day self drive to a mate for a 1.5 tonner. That was the cheapest. Later on in the forums illustrious history, I on the other hand was accused of marching little old grannies down the cash point because I charged £260 a day for a 1.5t operated. Dan (where is he now? He's missing) then top trumped me, but he is Surrah dahling after all.

I now have a 1.7t, which operated I try to get £280 a day for a one day job, and will drop down to £250 a day for a run of easy work closer to home. Specialist work which I have developed attachements for is higher, around £310 a day. My coming Bobcat E10 will go out for the same money as it cost near on the same to buy, and if you need a micro you need a micro. I'm toying with the idea of self drive on this, and would look to get £80 per day or £250 per week. I'll generally throw in a 350kg 4WD power barrow to seal the deal.

Just on Dan, i actually looked at this recently as he is missing and a shame, one of his last posts on CE was that he didn't come on much as he felt without trax it wasn't the same and has not logged in for months since.

He is active on FB though so maybe one day.

I am often asked to hire diggers but i couldn't deal with the pain when they come back with their arse ripped out

Well doobn this is always an interesting one, I always try to be transparent with hire rates a charge everyone the same so it doesn't come back to bite me, I will say that the bulk of my money is made on price work and hire fills in gaps or looks after my best customers. I'm up in near Wigan so not as upmarket as your neck of the woods but here it is,
Micro/1.5 ton £240
3 ton £265
5 ton £285
8 ton £310
13 ton £360

At these I feel it's worth doing and we are one of the dearest in the area.
Although most of my customers are loyal and don't want anyone else the are firms not far from me who'll send you a 210 with a driver for £27 an hour if you put fuel in just how good the driver is or how long they'll be in business I don't know but it does feck it up for the rest of us.

Up to recently firm. I'm on with were on rail job Scotland 6 nights a week,2x machines,2drivers,2x crane controllers,sometimes supervisor,sometimes I was doing supervisor as well as own job,£9750 shift,on track 01:00 to 03:30 latest,sometimes got piles down 200 mm a night

Well I have got £300/day for a 1.5t before for one off hires. I've also had £500/day for the 3t including breaker on the trial pitting in awkward parts of central London. However I feel as I'm looking to do more operated only plant rather than price work, I don't think Ill get those kinda rates day to day!
Currently pitching at;
Micro - 1.5t - £260/day
3t - £300/day
Breaker £50/day extra for either.
All plus vat but including fuel, transport (within reasonable distance) Operator, lunch, tea & coffee, sarcasm and waiting 30 days to get paid....

Currently only have the micro and a JCB dumpster £220-240 plus vat a day for the micro and £50 plus vat a day for the htd5.
Hard to get any ore as lot round my way are not vat registered and are similiar prices before I add the vat.
Have to hire in larger machines which makes me expensive managed to get a week's worth at £360 a day for a 5t machine but after hire charges, additional fuel and transportation fees not really any better off than turning up with the micro.
Can't see how some of the other companies can make money.
@doobin As for hire rates from a local firm can get a micro/1.5t for around £140 plus vat a week so unfortunately couldn't see you getting £250 a week for your new machine

I mainly do price work but charge £400 per day for my 18 tonners be it tracked or duck, even got that for the 1.4 Takeuchi (that was liberated from the scrap pile) on a few occasions

We don't stray far from home.... £50 each way transport for machines bar the 7.5t which is £100 each way.

Rates has always been a bone of contention when it comes to o/op ducks.

Back in the year 2000 a certain company was getting £28hr for their ducks on a road job, Lads were doing 12hr days and getting 3 sometimes 4 of 12hr nights in same week only out during closures maybe 22:00 until 2am and Mr Taylor said to himself, mmmmm, plenty of 7 day shifts and 13day fortnights in a previous life working rail at weekends and days on site for peanuts, maybe I should look into this.

Bearing in mind there was serious talk of a major upgrade to the M25 planned which was on my doorstep.
Only ever worked on the section around M25 / A282 / A2 interchange which was back in 2007/8

Back then most companies wanted a flat rate that they would pay, be it Wednesday or Sunday, day or night.
Today its not unusual to get a + rate for nights and weekends. Can vary from, £5 to £11 depending on who you listen to and who you trust and how desperate you are for the hire .

In 2001 I was getting £23 hr for a machine that set me back £25,000
In 2018 I have to fight to get £32hr for a machine that set me back over £140,000

Over the years I've had several conversations with wanna be owner operators, some from previous forum who rang up to talk rates.
Most had done the maths and were well on the way to living the dream and earning their fortune, all convinced I would be getting a minimum of £40hr and more than likely £50 oh dear, no, sorry! Go phone your local hire company and see what they are putting machines out at, thats what your competing with

I am currently in direct competition with Hawk, Flannery, Lynch and M O'Brien who maybe don't have tiltrotatored machines but they do have every bullshit tick box safety feature as required by Highways England and whats a tiltrotator anyway?

Folk ask, when are you changing the Hydrema Rob? I'm not is simple reply.

£32 per hour is tough when you spend that much on a machine. I guess you get a lot of hours in, but even then, you are not making a killing. Especially hard when you compare it to electricians or plumbers who spend a fraction of that on equipment.

When competition is fierce and big companies trim the rates to the bone, there’s not much left in it for the small guy. Hats off to you for sticking with it, and carving yourself a niche where your skill set and capabilities are highly valued, but I’m sure you ask yourself regularly, why you carry on at those rates?....

You can get £25/hr with a trowel in yr hand, for me it's a fine line. I'm close to admitting to running my own kit purely for for convenience and self satisfaction.

It's a joke there are some decorators turning up with nothing more than a set of hopups and a few brushes getting £200 a day and it seems no one bats an eyelid at at plumbers and sparks charging £300+ a day.

I usually ask for £30 hour and settle around £25 - 28 depending on how long the hire is. Quite a lot of my work will also be getting out rhe machine and helping with concrete and drainage etc. My set was around £20k.
Been looking at getting a bigger machine but can't justify spending the money to get not much more!

I dont believe this but what are the blokes on agency work actually likely to be making year round
