A friend of mine still runs an old G reg 7.5t merc dropside,would it be an 814? It was a replacement for a similar age vario that I believe went for export.

I used to run a beavertail. Didn’t use it enough to justify it. Went to a 3 Tonnne machine and didn’t need it any more. Haven’t missed it, until the last few weeks when I have been moving 8tonne machine and dumpers around. The reality is I would like to own a lorry.
But even after the moves that will be made shuffling all the kit back to where it came from, it is still cheaper than tying up capital and costs getting back into that game!!
But if I did get another truck, I would be going down the route that @Furniss has. One that has more than one role!!

In case anyone was in my doubt about how i feel about running a hookloader Truck 
I'll bite and have another go.
We had a long long time being moved by a local guy @ 140€/150€ a pop (all local) soon be 3.5/4k a year and lost 1/2 day every move by the time he got there and chained unchained/strapping etc, often now truck goes home with 6t on ready for next job, yesterday we were let down by quarry wagon and needed to push this forest track on so did a few myself - soon run 60t in to keep myself going, stops us being at the mercy of anyone, we still use 8wheelers from quarry if it fits in with them and then I crack on on machine, but a lot of the time 10t capacity does us on muck away and aggs in on small domestic jobs.
The ability to put skip on floor to load/unload is brilliant, no ramps or dodgy arse nippng scénarios loading.
Apart from initial outlay not much dearer so far to run than 7.5t and no comparison in efficiency.
I don't see it as a cost but as a money making tool..... definitely makes me money + its already 1/2 paid for which with second hand values being so strong over here is a form of saving.
