We where just saying the same, non essential shops thinking they`ve got the last roll of the dice, before the (welsh) lockdown makes them shut on Christmas eve, to be told to close tonight, with a couple of hours notice. Hospitality (that's still open), will had stocked up on food for Sunday lunches, told to shut.

the mother-in-law who at 86 is doing very well in our support bubble
But our grandchildren have all had several tests over the past few months with one positive result
Want to embrace positivity - in our part of Essex (Tendring District) as of today we have escaped being placed in Tier 4 and remain in Tier 2.
We will celebrate with a Merry Little Christmas on one day only
We do understand the restrictions and follow the news and guidance with a large helping of common sense
Above please stay safe and well

local FB groups here ... many small shopkeepers are all going back to work this evening 'til midnight .... can't blame them ...... if they'd made it tomorrow night it'd have at least given folk a chance .. As specified on the graph, the data source is John Hopkins - a respected research institute.
The graph shows "cases" not "death rates".
"cases" can be equated to the effectiveness of whatever measures are being used at that location.
"death rates" is more complicated because the statistics rapidly becomes misleading depending who has been infected -
a) ten school kids are infected, but none die = low death rate
b) ten elderly in 'gods waiting room' are infected and 6 die = high death rate.
For reasons some of you may have noticed, I have a personal interest in how several specific places around the globe are doing.
Two out of three countries I live are doing pretty well. The third is turning into a cesspool.
The first two have implemented effective lockdowns and (mostly) have the virus under control.
As with anything, if you implement a half-assed lockdown, it's not going to work.

@Gecko there s people out there that can show you charts where lockdowns and restrictions bear no relation to deathrate. Sure Australia has had a strong lock down and got off lightly, much like nz but that's not always the case. Some places have had strong lockdowns with bad death rates, others lighter measures with lower death rates.
End of the day we get hammered every year with seasonal respitory illness, we lost 50k to it in 2018 winter season. Unfortunately I don't think Aus/nz style lockdowns are a viable option here. We are a global hub. We were much more infected before anyone realised it was a problem, the genie was already out if the bottle.
Anyway, bring on the revolution, I have cctv coming lol.

@Jimoz, as above, death rates include a whole bunch of factors that only serve to confuse this issue.
Looking at infection rates alone gives you a much better idea if the implemented controls are working.
As for Australia - life was nearly back to normal until a US air crew introduced a new strain a few weeks ago. Sydney is imploding and all other states are closing their borders to prevent the spread.
Boris didn't take it seriously until he got a dose and I think you are right - by the time he did take it seriously, it was way too late.
At the start of the year, I was living 1000km from the chinese border. I knew the sh!t was going to hit the fan by the second week in Jan. If I knew, every significant government would have had advisors watching what was developing.
Hong Kong has recently banned BA (and others) for two weeks as penalty for bringing in infected passengers.
If the UK wants to be a global hub again, you'll need to get your act together.
