Don't know how the NHS has been playing it, but in Oz, the hospital numbers are below half normal - why? because elective surgery was banned in anticipation of a huge demand.
Hospitals have reduced capacity by converting three-bed-wards to two beds to allow increased separation in case of outbreak.

The graphs above show what is happening, but not why.

I've just been on the ONS website.
Figures for England & Wales all cause deaths 2019 - 530k
Deaths upto week 47 England and Wales 2020 - 542K
(might be a few extra K to be added on it latest weeks due to time lag? or could be the reason can only now access figures upto 20/11)
6 more reporting weeks to be added on.
We are averaging about 10,000 deaths per week atm.
We're probably going to be at 600K deaths this year, maybe 650K

Doesn't look great at first sight, 10/20% worse. But similar to early 2000's. Also how many have been taken early from us this year with the 'harvesting' effect that covid is bound to have? What will next year bring?

The point is the bodies aren't piling up on the streets. Every man and his dog has massively over egged this.

I'm not posting to have a rant I just wanted to check these figures and it has helped me to write them down and spell out my thoughts. I had another email back from my MP today and he disagrees with me when I claimed this is 'no worse than a bad flu season and definitely not and "extinction level" event.

What do you all think?

It's a shame I was kind of looking forward to a mad max post apocalyptic world to liven things up

I really think @Jimoz, its difficult to look at the figures and base that on what's actually happening. Not just from an accuracy standpoint, the whole point of the lockdown was to reduce transmission and therefore pressure on hospitals. Well from the figures about, that seems to have worked. Remember there is a 3-6 week delay on any action taken today, so its not a case of looking at the figures and using that as justification its all bollocks, because its what "would" have happened that justified the decision for lockdown 2.
Personally I don't like lockdowns, total waste of time, nobody was really locked down except the poor businesses that were forced to close. Its wholly unfair and judging by the traffic and peoples behaviour in shops - was largely ignored. What we really needed was a proper lockdown, nobody move, airports shut kind of lockdown. Shorter duration but hit the transmission of the virus hard. Its a tough call and no doubt does infringe on peoples human rights, but if you really want to stop a virus spreading - there's not many options available to you.
I can see lockdown 3 coming after Christmas, probably advertised as "tier 4" restrictions. Jobs f***ed boys

Yeh I accept that @Gunners people will argue lockdowns saved loads but they can't prove it. If you look around the world severity of lockdown does not tally in any way with fatalities.

I'm getting really despondent with it now. I think the vaccine being approved has pissed me off. The govt are going to get away with pretending they saved everyone from Armageddon when they haven't.

I suppose the ultimate question is what do we expect from the govt and how far do we want to let it into our lives? One thing for certain I can now see why the yanks value their constitutional rights.

Also I should of said above my biggest fear now there s a vaccine and everything's hunky dory is that this is going to repeat every few years when a novel virus comes along, sars, swine flu, bird flu Covid19 etc etc

@Jimoz makes very good points. As I have been saying from very early, if you need to take care, then take care!!
The debt the government has run up is going to mean financial pain will be worse than the flu itself!!

Agree 100% .
Pondering this...in lockdown 1...no one wore masks..... then gradually masks come in ....the rate goes up?
I don't know just occured to me.
Not that I'm anti mask as such , I wear if I have to in shops to try and be "polite and do the right thing" but

I think you are right that the deaths we have had have been lower than expected. But surely this is a result of the measures being used, there's less travel so less accidents on the roads etc. There may even be a net positive impact from people having been at home more - some may have been eating healthier and doing more exercise. Not to mention the lockdown babies we will start to see early next year!

Agree totally,save the NHS but two / three years down the line,fall in tax revenues,increase in debt,long term health problems un diagnosed/treated this year n next will brew up an imperfect storm imho
