All joking aside but just wait until the supply chains stop due to it...... People in distribution need to be out regardless.... country will be f***ed otherwise.
Agree, looks like some drivers hours relaxation etc will kick in? Will get supermarkets thinking about reliance on imported goods I bet ..

I hate to say it, but if everyone is quarantined for weeks as looks inevitable then the only way I can see of saving the economy is for the government to introduce a temporary universal basic income.
Scary new world order stuff.

My contacts in the city tell me they are already bracing themselves for what they see as a relatively short duration but very hard recession this year. People I know who are teachers are already being told that Easter holidays might come early and there's no guarantee they will go back after. Batten down the hatches boys, its coming.

But the big question is - whos going to get it first on here? Thinking we should get a syndicate going.
Druid is already self isolated so he's going to last a while. Old age might get him first🤪
Rory lives in the middle of nowhere but goes to the pub at least twice a day so could be on the risk list
Doobin works for grannies so he has to be up there too.
And TiltyShaun has kids so its inevitable, so unfortunately mate you're my top seed 😆

What is the good of giving people money if there is nothing to spend it on?

There are millions who rely upon working and being paid hourly to pay the rent or mortgage. Italy is introducing mortgage holidays. What about the renters? What about the landlords who will go bust if they don’t get the rent? What about those paid hourly with nothing in the bank who can’t afford food if they don’t work? What about those who will be plunged into an overdraft (going up to 40% rates in April) by the first electric bill after not being able to work?
You either means test and subsidise each individual service or say f**k it, universal basic income is cheaper to administer.

Apparently Amazon are busier now than at Christmas as everyone is ordering online rather than go to the shops, if the low oil prices reflect in fuel costs they’re probably in for a very good few months at least until the supply chain runs out

👍 Controversial I know but I don't see any harm in stocking up, like u say we the same it's nigh on 30 mins to nearest proper supermarket for us so we don't waste time trekking more than we need to.
All it does is show the UKs lack of capacity and how overcrowded we are.....folks double their shop and it wipes out shops....imagine if there was a proper disaster...🙉 Ah well local farms be chuffed with free labour for next few weeks if schools shut...😄

All joking aside but just wait until the supply chains stop due to it...... People in distribution need to be out regardless.... country will be f***ed otherwise.

yeh we're not that far from shops in a few directions - 20-30 min.s, but see no point in trekking every few days /week ... when we're there (well me actually - I do our shops usually-Pam hates it) I 'hit it' ... and really fill up ... but as said every two/three weeks ... leave it as long as poss. Milk tends to be the one thing that 'drives' me out for supplies .. 3 gallons'll usually stretch two and a half weeks and can 'top up' from the little garage shop in the village - at twice the price!!
two freezers (and a third that I could / might switch on today) will store a LOT to keep us provisioned for a good month plus ... Might sneak into town 'bout half eight tonight, when the rest of the world's in the pub / watching the box and 'top up' ... late night opening is great ... real quiet usually, but run the risk of shelves being depleted ....... we're ok really for a couple of weeks, but by that time the tish may well have deepened considerably, so better to try a top up now

as Rory rightly says ... in this JIT world, when the supply chain starts to break down, then the crap'll hit the fan

Pancreatitis is fkn scary s**t ... 'specially the second time round .. it can be and often is fatal .. survived it twice now, so odds're shortening :oops: ... when I had it back in 2010, was an MP died from it same week :cry:o_O

Anyway ...... pretty sure i may have 'kin had it ...... whatever floored me after Crimbo was some serious 'cold'/bug .... was like a limp / wet rag for a week or more and delayed me getting the P38 done for nigh on two weeks in all ... had a lot of the symptoms  .... so here's hoping :giggle: ... IIRC @Cyberprog had the same sort of thing too

Rory'll be fine ... he's a bit of an animal and it ain't jumped species yet :p:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Regarding help for small businesses-

  • The government will provide an additional £2.2 billion funding for local authorities to support small businesses that already pay little or no Business Rates because of Small Business Rate Relief (SBBR). This will provide a one-off grant of £3,000 to around 700,000 business currently eligible for SBRR or Rural Rate Relief, to help meet their ongoing business costs. For a property with a rateable value of £12,000, this is one quarter of their rateable value, or comparable to 3 months of rent.
  • A new temporary Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme, delivered by the British Business Bank, will launch in a matter of weeks to support businesses to access bank lending and overdrafts. The government will provide lenders with a guarantee of 80% on each loan (subject to a per-lender cap on claims) to give lenders further confidence in continuing to provide finance to SMEs. The government will not charge businesses or banks for this guarantee, and the Scheme will support loans of up to £1.2 million in value. This new guarantee will initially support up to £1 billion of lending on top of current support offered through the British Business Bank.

Not a bad start, and might be enough if we can keep public confidence high enough to start spending straight away after the outbreak finishes.

I agree with what you are saying about rent and mortgages, I was thinking more basic that if no-one went to work there would be no food in the shops to buy or shops open to sell you stuff, so giving people food parcels would be of more immediate benefit as you can't eat money. Obviously hoping any shut down will only be days or weeks at the most as we will run out of food at home pretty quickly. I guess if no-one is allowed out there won't be any electricity or gas either.

I checked on line this morning and only 20 people in the whole of Hampshire have had it out of about 1.4 million, so if 80% are going to get it we have a long way to go before it is over.
