What do you want a 2.4t for if you already have a 2.8t?
Well It seems a bit silly having 2x 3 tonners. I love them but can be a pain when I'm wanting digger and several attachments for a days work as they're 2.9ton with just 1 bucket. The 2.4t is the biggest thing I can tow around with say a grab, several buckets, riddle bucket etc baring in mind I only use a Discovery to move my kit.
Also I'm in and out of the machine all-day long with the walling side of things and it's the little things that really help, the ET24 with the tracks wider than the cab make it alot easier to get in and out of than my 2.8t.

I'm opposite. Can't stand using offset unless it's needed to bend into an area.
It depends what I'm doing. Hard digging I don't like doing offset as your pulling on the slew. But ditching I like to be as close to the ditch with it fully offset for better view

I find it very difficult to control the slew accurately. When digging a trench for example, the bucket touches the side, so there is no problem. Greatest issue for me is lining up, to change buckets. Even if the control is moved extremely slowly, nothing happens, then whoosh, it overshoots. It then overshoots when trying to get back where you wanted it in the first place.
This could be operator error, but I have never been able to find anyone else who has this machine. As stated, I am not a professional machine driver.
If you ever find yourself in Norfolk, you are welcome to have a go.
Are you sure yours isn't faulty? Looking at a few videos they all seem quite controlled when slew comes to a stop...

My machine has been back to the dealer who said it was OK. Just to clarify, the slew is very smooth in operation, but when small movements are required that's when I find the difficulty. I regard small as 1/4" to 1/2". The machine responds to those sort of movements correctly with the other controls. The dealer is always going to say that it is "operator error mate". It may be a limitation of the operator, which I could accept, or it may be the machine's design.
I have yet to speak to another owner or even a user who would offer a reliable independent second opinion.

There will be 1/2" of backlash at theh end of the jib in any slew ring mate!

1/2" of travel in a ram is very different from 1/2" of travel at the end of the jib driven by a tiny cog on a motor on the slew ring.

Wiithout driving your machine I wouldn't like to say 'it's totaally normal' but it does sound like the problem will get better as you get your eye in, if you're talking about those tiny distances. Unless you're saying you move the control a smidge and the bucket jumps over 6"?

Put the bucket in the air arm out at full reach and turn it off....wag the bucket manually and is there a lot of rotation in the slew ?

There will be a seemingly large amount if you do that on any mini though?

When i got the u17 i thought it was awful in the slew compared to the 8014 and side by side when tested like that the 8014 with iirc 3500hrs had half the wag of the u17 with 700hrs.
When your working along side something with the ditcher and wanting to creep across a couple of cm and there is no resistance, final grade stoning up for instance, the u17 makes you look like a novice.

One thing I have found with the slew, once movement has started to get rid of any backlash, the control can be eased off to give a very fine rotation, which is superb. However you cannot reverse that procedure. i.e You cannot start off very slowly with a gentle control operation, there always a lurch.
It seems that if you go way past where you need the bucket, reverse control, then it can be slowly eased off to stop where required.
It could be that the operator is slowly gaining more experience.:)
