Been onto a ‘modern’ building site lately? You’ll have a floodlit tarmac bay with boot wash facilities for every machine 🙄
Funny you mention that but a culvert has been diverted up here recently as the old stone one was collapsing, EA job so volker stevin job unless they've changed name. You should have seen the chunk if field tarmacced for the compound and cabins f'in joke. Anyhow when jobs finished just before crimbo found out it cost 2 mill! 10k a metre to put some conc pipes under the sod ffs.
Point being were pi**ing in the wind worrying about a few exhaust fumes with all the other waste.

and just where is all this megawattage going to come from to charge all this Fred .... the grid struggles with a fleet of kettles in the TV ad.s most evenings

off peak is a huge excess, overnight charging and vehicle 2 grid enabling massive storage capability. its all coming.

I.C.E dead? I've never heard such utter bollocks.

We will be using them long into the future..... The fuel is the arguable problem not the engine....
8 years left until they wont be sold. its coming.

Price of pre 2010 units will rocket or there will be backtracking.... Mark my words.

i dont think so. with the demise of garages as will be pointless selling fuel to no customers the cost of fuel for legacy vehicles will be taxed like fags. £25 a gallon etc.

Maybe a short exception for haulage until they are also electrified.

Oh I wasn’t joking with my post….!!! The compounds cost more money than the actual job these days!

And here we have it....nailed it imo. No one is looking at real waste or efficiency...and you can guarantee they'll tick all the green boxes to get a government contract. You couldn't make it up.

Its not waste if its actually required to do the job. Yes it seems wasteful to tarmac an area only to rip it up again a few months later, but the requirements on main contractors as to what they have to provide now aren't getting any less. The prelims on jobs I do for schools is easily over 10% of the overall cost of the job. And I do my best to keep it to a minimum! But its what's being asked of us now and in some ways, its nice the workforce are finally getting some decent facilities at their place of work.
How many times have we worked without a toilet even - its stone age lads!
We made do as we always will but we aren't going to get new people into the industry with that attitude. And quite frankly, the client wouldn't expect you to not have a toilet. Same argument for somewhere to eat and dry your clothes. Then some segregation from the public, stone or track mats to get you out the mud. More stone or matts to park vans on.... It easily builds up and that's before your inhouse safety officer tells you he wants more toilets for covid segregation, or a ladies toilet for the occasional lady tipper driver - he's not wrong but it all adds up!
And don't get me started on the non essential site setups that go on to try and win most considerate contractor of the year.... Now that is wasteful

But you get my point, site setups are only going to get more expensive too. Wont be long before owning your own welfare unit isn't that uncommon - a few of us already have one I know, but we are a forward thinking bunch on here 😉

It can start to pay back for itself.
How much time is wasted pissing around in the mud when a few hundred quids worth of crush will sort it out.

Fair enough subbase is cheap when compared to lost production. But the job i mentioned probably has a dozen actual workers on it at the most and they tarmacced an area big enough to park about 50 cars on. Ffs why was subbase not good enough.

Most likely someone decided sub base was a trip hazard but I have been on sites where it has worked out cheaper to use 6-8 inches of binder course rather than a deep subbase.

A very environmentally friendly low emission solution to a problem which only exists because lazy bas**ds are too idle to pick their feet up that sounds like.

Most likely yes but if it's wet or spongy ground then a thick binder course can be a better option. There is a 60mm binder course available, I haven't actually used it but know it's a replacement for GSB on wet ground to make a big floating pad. Rather than using 2ft of crush

days of the ICE engine are over, they are mad spending dollar into them.

Look at tesla market cap bigger than ford and gm put together.

Whoever gets the quick change or charge battery back to market will win. Personally i cant wait to get rid of the hassle of diesel engines and fuel hassle on the plant, firms like JCB should be at the front of this not piddling about with fossil engines.

Bamford should just pick up the twitter to Elon and get it done, they would take the heavy plant market overnight.
This is one of the funniest posts I’ve read all year. If there was a battery version of every machine you have, would you change? No, because you couldn’t afford to, and if you could you’d soon get pissed off with the batteries going flat after a couple of hours of hard work, and deteriorating after a year or two. If you think the cost of batteries is going to fall, think again. They’ll go up due to the scarcity of what goes into them, and the fact that China has quietly got its hands on a lot of the resources.
