Cheap/Backup Wacker anyone? Aldi Special!

I think that's a difficult question to answer because it assumes all "petrol" is the same thing.
The petrol I buy in Oz seems to last years without causing problems in "normal performance" engines except for a (now long discontinued) fuel sold be Shell called "Ultimate". This one caused a lot of plug fouling in bikes and was considered to have a shelf life measured in weeks.
The petrol I buy in SEAsia smells strongly of toluene (paint thinners). Apart from being very bad for your health, it acts as an octane booster, meaning it'll compensate for other short comings.
It doesn’t vary too much here, you hear of the odd bad batch but it’s often down to tank cleaning. One year I had the same petrol in a mower and Aldi whacker, in spring the mower started but ran crap, the whacker wouldn’t start until I drained it. That was approx. 4 months from filling the can at the pump to post-Christmas issues.

New plug again out of the 2 pack got it to run on brake cleaner. Fuel drained and went bought some new fuel. Got it running. Doesn't like revving right up when choke off seems to prefer half choke. Is this hose hanging down on your wackers or have I pulled it loose from somewhere? Im getting a constant drip of fuel when the fuel is turned on. Less if the engine is running but steady drip if engine not using the fuel 20260221_131358.jpg

I'd guess your needle valve is gummed up and possibly the main jet .. complete strip and soaking in carb cleaner

I know everyone always talks about stripping and soaking the carburetor in cleaner. However, if you are pressed for time. You can justclean the needle valve and seat and the main jet and it will run fine and not leak fuel.

This was what was in there yesterday gave it bit of a cleanView attachment 79999
think you need a new fuel can Jim :cry:
that's a hell of a mess

that needle/float valve is going to be in the same state .. :unsure:o_O

little pipe may well be an overflow and the needles not seating properly, flooding the float chamber, 'cos the needle's not seating properly and closing the flow of fuel - pull the float and needle and give the seat a good blast with cleaner and some air pressure after

main jet body is covered in lacquer so is a fair bet everything else is too

Crazy its a plastic 5l fuel can. You'd look at the state of that and think the machine has been thru the wars. It's just sat for ages prob been used for 50hrs from new. The actual fuel tank on it is quote clean not all crap in it like that.

"won't run without choke" means it's lean (getting air, but not enough fuel).
Not idling, but running open throttle means the pilot jet is blocked. This can usually be cleared by removing the pilot needle and blowing with compressed air - BUT - to make life easy, mark the position of the needle then wind it in, counting the turns before it bottoms - make a note of this and put it back as you found it.

Next: below the fuel tap is a bowl. Remove (10mm ring or socket) and clean as it's the nearest thing these engines have to a filter.

... and seriously consider adding an inline filter to the fuel line.

To prevent (slow) the gum build up in the carb, rather than just cutting the ignition at the end of a job, turn the fuel tap off and let it run the carb dry.

That's a good shout about burning the fuel off rather than turning off. My 2 stroke stuff I always empty the tank then let them run dry. I wonder why this blocks up so easy when the old genny just keeps going. The genny has a Honda gx140 I've ordered a new air filter for it as it was embarrassing when I took the cover off how bad it was. Hondas must be the hilux equivalent of generators do the taliban use them 🤣

Not sure I'm upto the technical ability of stripping and cleaning jets. 🤣

really isn't rocket science Jim ... you'll wonder what all the fuss was about once you've done one ;)

Me neither, quicker to stick a new carb on there.

Non genuine ones sometimes only 20 quid
Good shout. Comes with filter too. Will just have to weigh up whats quicker or easier for me to do. Might have a quick go at the jets nothing to lose.

As druid said, it isn't as hard as it sounds. No need to remove the carb from the engine.

Pilot screw - red, main jet - green, float hinge - blue.
  • Unscrew the pilot and main.
  • The hinge pin will probably slide out without needing tools.
  • The valve needle above will then fall out.
  • Remove the bowl from under the fuel valve.
  • Blast with compressed air and reassemble.
